Mining communication systems converging | Bucks and Spurs Guest ...

Mining communication trends are following in the footsteps of
standard telecommunication developments, with the convergence of
existing technologies.

In the communications industry, fibre optic cables are being used
to carry video, data and information technology traffic.

TSI Communications MD Paul Wagstaff says the trend is being found
in the mining industry, where leaky-feeder systems, which provide
radio frequency communication, are increasingly carrying data,
tele-metry, tracking and video information. According to Wagstaff,
future developments in the industry will focus on technologies that
improve safety and productivity, reduce costs, and provide
management tools that contribute towards keeping mines financially
viable.

TSIadjust the settings for impact crusher supplier is reported to be the largest local manufacturer of
telecommunication systems for the mining industry.

Wagstaff estimates that the group has a 70% share of the market for
mining telecommunications systems, as it supplies AngloGold, Gold
Fields, Anglo Platinum, Impala Platinum and Sasol ? to name
but a few ? under contract, and Anglo Coal and Harmony when
requested.

At the end of last year, the company became theimpact crusher machines supplier cost first local
distributor of the leaky-feeder equipment manufactured for
Minecom.

According to Wagstaff, the full range of Minecom?s VHF and
UFH leaky-feeder products and services, as well as its range of
ancillary products are now available in South Africa.

Further, PR Electronics, the Pinetown leaky-feeder designer and
manufacturer, has established Minecom SA to market the product in
the rest of Africa.

?Minecom prosuppliers of silica sand crusher in india manufacturerducts have been tried and tested worldwide in a
variety of environments, and customers are buying a proved
product.

?The range includes leaky-feeder equipment, as well as
man-tagging and vehicle-tagging systems.

?We are also receiving training in several other products
soon to be launched,? Wagstaff says.

TSI itself designs and manufactures mining telephones and
specialised communications systemobile jaw crusher manufacturer in india pricesms, including auto mining phones
? which are IP65 dustproof, flame- and explosion-proof and
intrinsically safe ? and magneto, page and party-line
telephones.

Its products are exported to several African countries, including
Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania; as well as the Middle East, the UK,
the US and Australia.

Wagstaff adds that his company is currently focusing on breaking
into the South American market. According to him, the company is
committed to supporting other local manufacturers, such as South
African Micro-Electronic Systems, which is based outside Pretoria,
and designs and manufactures silicone chips for use in telephony,
radio-frequency identification devices and customer-specific
integrated circuits. TSI?s products are manufactured at its
factory in Aeroton, close to the Nasrec Showgrounds, south of
Johannesburg.

The company combines surface-mount devices for large-volume
manufacture, and uses standard components for small quantity runs.
It manufactures communication equipment according to the
specifications of different mining sectors.

Last month the company completed the installation of a leaky-feeder
system connecting Gold Fields Kloof gold-mine?s main shaft
with its Number Four shaft.

The company also started with the installation of a communication
system at Kloof that will relay information on tracking and
weighing to the mine?s operations room.

Wagstaff says this will allow the mine instant access to
information on equipment transporting ore on about 20 km of
underground track, which will improve safety and production, and
reduce costs.

It will also enable the mine to accurately record the tonnages
mined by contractors.

Last month TSI also completed the installation of a closed-circuit
television system at Anglo Coal?s Bank colliery, in
Mpumalanga. The company is currently working with Gold
Fields? Driefontein gold-mine on a project aimed at
implementing personnel-tracking and asset-tracking. A few months
ago it installed more than 200 telephone extensions, covering
between three and four kilometres of underground tunnels, using
fibre optic cable.

Wagstaff says the telephone network facilitates communication
between the different sections underground, and allows management
to monitor the system using network management software.

In another project, TSI has developed a telephone cable fault
location course developed at the request of Sasol?s mines,
and is training the company?s electricians to improve its
communications networks.
