Netflix for iOS updated with a new player UI, support for alternate language audio and more

There's still no word available on HD video streaming, but Netflix has just released version 2.2 of its app for iPhones and iPads. While the front end got tablet friendly in December and received a Retina Display makeover in March, this version brings a new player UI to all iOS devices. The new scrub bar seems much easier to reach and control now, while the button for subtitles has a received a tweak reminiscent of the new look recently pushed to Netflix's web based player. Also under that button is a new option allowing for alternate language soundtracks (where available), while the changelog goes on to mention "general performance improvements". Not documented but present is the addition of thumbnails in that scrub bar, easier access to "do not share" for Facebook-connected members and the ability to restrict streaming to WiFi-only in the settings. The new version is shown above, check after the break for a grab of the old player to see the difference. As always, the latest update can be found in the app store, we'll let you know if we hear of any extra details or changes on other platforms.

Its moments of transporting beauty and visual brilliance overcame my growing aversion to Wes Anderson's brand of ultra-stylized archness.

We may look back on Anderson's works as we do on the boxes of Joseph Cornell -- formal troves of frippery, studded with nostalgic private jokes, that lodge inexplicably in the heart. In Moonrise Kingdom, that lodging is already under way.

It makes you nostalgic for the pangs of young love.

What makes it an Anderson movie are the things he adds which mark all his films - the pop-cultural obsessions and excruciatingly detailed set decorations, overarching thematic concerns and little stylistic tics.

I liked this one because of its young performers, the evocative island setting (filmed in Rhode Island), Alexandre Desplat's lovely score and Robert Yeoman's slightly grainy cinematography.

The director's best film since 1998's Rushmore, it has none of the self-conscious smugness of The Life Aquatic or the empty eccentricity of The Royal Tenenbaums.

A gossamer fable of adolescent romance, played out with the cheekily whimsical, visually delicious style for which Anderson is famous.

Wes Anderson's most sartorially significant film yet.

At once funny and melancholic, whimsical and poignantly true.

One is at times reminded of AE Housman.

Moonrise Kingdom is a delight... stuffed full of the quirky details and gags that are Anderson's trademarks, but it also possesses an emotional undertow that will tug at those viewers in tune with its singular sensibility.

Capturing our inner children

If the deadpan sensibility of the film ultimately leaves it feeling a tad lightweight, that isn't to say that Moonrise Kingdom isn't a funny, witty and well-crafted film.

Typically quirky Wes Anderson dramedy has lots of heart.

A bittersweet and evocative period piece that's both a visual and narrative delight.

No one has an eye or sensibility like Anderson's, but this is a chilly disappointment. The unaffecting kids are meant to be the emotional center, yet the adults steal the film.

I really wanted to like this film. I respect Wes Anderson and his distinctive voice as a writer-director ('Rushmore' is one of my favorite films of the 1990s), but this latest endeavor is so precious and self-aware that it nearly smothers itself.

Those who find the director's work flawed by preciousness, however, may grow impatient well before the movie reaches the 90-minute mark.

Anderson has imagined the '60s on the East Coast as if from an Eddie Bauer catalog and Boys' Life, with the sensibility of The New Yorker.

Like many holiday locations, you wouldn't want to live there, but a mini-break from the norm can be a real tonic.

A sweet, charming and altogether delightful bit of whimsy from writer/director Wes Anderson.

I normally end up liking Wes Anderson's films, but I love this one.

The delightful Moonrise Kingdom marks a career high for offbeat auteur Wes Anderson.

FREMONT, Calif. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is assailing President Barack Obama's green energy record, standing outside the shuttered offices of a solar energy company that went bankrupt after receiving government loans.

Romney says a $535 million loan to Solyndra represented a conflict of interest because it benefited some of Obama's campaign contributors. He says the loan also discouraged others from starting similar companies.

Meanwhile, in Boston, Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said at a news conference that Romney ushered in slow job growth, higher debt and more fees as governor of Massachusetts.

Axelrod was heckled by Romney supporters, who chanted, "Solyndra, Solyndra."

Romney defended his gubernatorial record, saying the state's unemployment rate dropped during his tenure.

Solve Presentation Problems With This Stolen Trick - Business Insider

Because I teach Pitching the Perfect Presentation at UCLA Ext., I?m always asked for tips and techniques about public speaking, which apparently more people fear than they fear death.

I have an effective approach to tamping down your nerves and rising to meet your audience?s desire to be educated and entertained. I stole this trick from the method we use to prepare guests and hosts for interviews on television and radio.

The stolen trick

The trick? Prepare a question guide for yourself. Imagine you?re interviewing the most interesting you.

Start this way. Simply write down the top 5 to 10 questions that are likely to open up a discussion about the most important issues surrounding your topic. Then, to put it into a presentation format: simply answer each questions with facts, examples, success stories, analogies, statistics, testimonials and even dramatic quotations from sages you feel support your desired course of action.

For example: a question might be: Why Take Action Now?

Your answer might be: ?As the famous game designer Bill Budge says: ?After two weeks of working on a project, you know whether it will work or not.??

Then, in your presentation you would go on about the proposed schedule and other details that support your point of view on the issue.

Why a question guide?

A guide is a framework I provide for broadcast hosts who are going to interview the authors and experts I publish or promote at Pegasus Media World. I also send along a biography, which the host can use to introduce the guest. I include exactly the right mix of information to stir up some excitement about the topic and give credibility to the author. Plus, hosts also get the question guide.

The biography and guide are designed to help structure a broadcast interview so it?s informative and entertaining.? This accomplishes our goals of promoting the book or expert by engaging the audience (who might just be listening and not able to call in with their own questions). And, it helps the host come up to speed in-the-moment if they haven?t had a chance to read the guest?s book.

Your typical audience in business ? and even in job interviews ? need to be inspired to commit to listening to you and often isn?t prepared for your presentation. That?s why you can treat your audience the way I treat interviewers. Remember, I call whomever is listening to you ?your audience,? whether it?s one person or thousands.

For broadcast interviews I typically provide the questions without including the answers so the conversation feels lively and unrehearsed. Occasionally, I?ll include a brief note so that the host will be prepared for the conversation that?s sparked by each question. You can use your question guide as a meeting map, which is what I call an agenda.

For your presentation, you might not want to write out your answers even for yourself. Instead, under each question just jot down some bullet points to prompt yourself. Then, you can appear lively and fresh, rather than rehearsed and stale.

Start your preparation by asking yourself (or those who might be participating in your meeting) these two questions.

?What about me and my background will give me credibility on this topic and inspire the audience to give me their attention??
??What are the burning questions about my topic that the audience will want me to answer??

Discos to destruction: images of Mogadishu

Funky dancing in a seaside bar, Vespa scooters on elegant, broad boulevards: the faded images of a lost Somalia and its ancient capital are at odds with a place now better known for famine and war.

Those who dare to visit contemporary Mogadishu, often dubbed the world's most dangerous capital, catch only a glimpse of its vanished beauty in the bullet-scarred wasteland devastated by more than two decades of civil war.

But a new photo exhibition, entitled a "Pictorial Tribute to Africa's Most Wounded City", offers proof of Mogadishu's forgotten past alongside recent -- and more recognisable -- images of the ruin so much of it has become.

"Many of the young people of Somalia were born in refugee camps or around the world, so they don't know Mogadishu, they don't know what they lost," said the show's curator Mohamud Diriye, former head of Mogadishu's museums.

Its organisers hope the pre-1990s images, to be displayed in the Alliance Fran?aise in the Kenyan capital Nairobi in June, recall what Mogadishu once was and, perhaps, what it could be again.

"The memory of the past offers hope for the future," said Diriye. He managed to rescue boxes of historical photographs when brutal civil war broke out in 1991 -- battles that continue today as Islamist fighters attack the weak Western-backed government and African Union forces in Mogadishu.

"Nothing was left," he said, shaking his head at a photograph showing gaping holes smashed in a museum wall. "It was all looted, everything."

One photograph from the early 1980s shows a white-washed hotel against crashing waves, a once popular nightclub and bar on its rooftop. Today only the grey concrete pillars that barely hold up the crumbling structure remain.

"There used to be more nightclubs than mosques in Mogadishu, believe me," said Diriye wistfully, pointing to another shot from the same years of women in flowery minidresses grooving alongside men in tight white flares.

"Rock'n roll, cha-cha-cha, reggae, the twist, Soul Train, we'd dance them all," he added, lingering over a shot of his younger self, where he sported a fine afro haircut and moustache. "My dream was to be a musician."

Outside a cathedral from the Italian colonial era -- now a roofless ruin once used as target practice by Islamist fighters -- schoolgirls smile for the camera in front of a bride in a flowing white wedding dress.

Female police officers in caps and tight blouses pose in another shot from the 1980s, an image unthinkable today in the restive capital even though the Al-Qaeda affiliated Islamist Shebab insurgents were driven out last year.

In another shot, a narrow street with Moorish architecture like that in the film classic Casablanca leads to a white-washed stone archway, beyond which the deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean glitter in the distance.

"Instead of looking at our differences, the photographs help to show what we all have in common -- our history," said co-curator Ismail Osman, who grew up in Somalia but fled to the US in 1991.

"I hope people look at the images and say, 'We had all this! Then we can agree on something.'"

Another shot shows a tourism poster of white sand beaches and palm-lined streets with a smiling child in the foreground and the caption "Beautiful Somalia".

"People used to come to Mogadishu for holidays," said Osman. "As a teenager in the 1980s, I used to remember that I could choose from 11 different cinemas."

Fighting erupted in Somalia in the late 1980s and escalated into civil war after a 1991 coup, with rival militias, warlords and Islamist fighters battling ever since for control of the lawless nation.

"There is a stereotype of Mogadishu -- all you see normally are images of a pirate, terrorist or a starving mother and child," said photographer Rasna Warah, a Kenyan of Indian origin who took the contemporary shots in the show.

"So when I arrived in Mogadishu, I couldn't believe that there are still buildings of beauty there, even if they are full of bullet holes," said Warah, whose visit to the city last year gave her the idea for the show.

Mogadishu -- from the Arabic Maq'adul Shah or "seat of the sovereign" -- was founded in the 10th century by Arab and Persian traders.

Ships loaded with cloth, spices and other goods would cross the Indian Ocean to trade at Mogadishu's port for ivory, slaves, camels, frankincense and myrrh.

"It is an ancient city, a magic city, and some of the mosques are the oldest in Africa," Diriye said.

Later, rulers from Oman and the East African spice island of Zanzibar took control before Italian colonisers arrived in 1891, transforming much of the city with wide boulevards and Roman-style triumphal arches.

Today, hundreds of thousands of displaced people live in and around Mogadishu, many in rag-and-plastic shelters, some in the roofless ruins of hotels, churches and villas.

But despite the violence, Mogadishu retains its unique character: Arab-style coral stone houses and a centuries-old lighthouse are crumbling but still line the seafront, while the national theatre is pockmarked with bullets and lost its roof but reopened earlier this year.

The exhibition -- partly funded by a Turkish company -- has also been shown in Turkey and organisers hope it will one day make it to Mogadishu.

"Our main goal is to take the photos home to show people there," Warah said. "We will just have to find a building without bullet holes to put it in."

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) ? Lady Gaga told fans she was "devastated" at having to cancel her sold-out show in Indonesia following threats by Islamic hard-liners, who called her a "devil worshipper."

Controversy over the concert is a blow to the predominantly Muslim country's reputation as a tolerant, pluralist society that respects freedom of expression.

Some fans accused police ? who refused to issue a permit over concerns about security ? of buckling to the will of a small group of thugs.

"We had to cancel the concert in Indonesia," the 26-year-old pop diva tweeted to her followers Sunday night after promoters acknowledged concerns about her own safety and that of her "Little Monster" fans if the show went ahead.

"I'm so very sorry to the fans & just as devastated as you if not more," she wrote. "You are everything to me."

Indonesia, a secular nation of 240 million, is often held up by the U.S. and others an example of how democracy and Islam and can coexist. In many ways they are right. Police responded by denying the necessary permits. Then, after public outcry, they said they'd reconsider ? but only if Lady Gaga agreed to tone down her act.

Instead, she pulled the plug on what was supposed to be the biggest stop on her Asian tour.

Michael Rusli, head of Big Daddy, promised "Little Monster" fans full refunds.

But that provided little consolation to people like 25-year-old Johnny Purba.

"This only shows to the world how weak security forces are in this country, how police are afraid of a bunch of hard-liners," he said.

"Gaga's two-hour show will not hurt Indonesian Muslims. For God's sake, she is not a terrorist!"

Hard-liners, however, were ecstatic.

"This is a victory for Indonesian Muslims," said Salim Alatas, one of the leaders of the Islamic Defenders Front. "Thanks to God for protecting us from a kind of devil."

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- Sweden's Loreen won the Eurovision Song Contest in Azerbaijan on Sunday before an international TV audience of 100 million, days after angering Azeri authorities by meeting rights activists critical of the host country's human rights record.

Opposition groups have used the Eurovision spotlight, intended by Azerbaijan to promote the country as a destination for tourism and business, to demand democracy and the resignation of the government. Dozens of peaceful protesters have been arrested this month in the Caspian coastal capital, Baku. Activists say some buildings in the center of the city were torn down to make way for the Eurovision arena and residents were forcibly evicted without proper compensation.

The 28-year-old pop singer won with the song "Euphoria" in the annual competition of 42 countries, delighting viewers and the contest's professional judges and dancing barefoot as she sang.

"This is about all of us! Thank you so very much!" Loreen told a news conference.

She said the first to congratulate her were her family and her crew. Her mother joined her briefly at the news conference.

"Time has stopped," Loreen said about her feelings after she was announced as winner.

Russia's entry, rural folk group Buranovskiye Babushki (Grannies from Buranovo) came in second and Serbia's Zeljko Joksimovic was third in the 57th year of a contest famous for heavy-duty kitsch.

The competition took place in a specially built "Crystal Hall" on the shores of the Caspian.

Loreen has met with activists who accuse the government of forcing people from their homes for the building of the hall, an accusation Baku denies. Azeri authorities accused her of making political statements that had no place at a musical event.

'Historical and magical'

Hundreds of people started pouring into a roundabout in central Stockholm, dancing in a fountain, honking horns and waving flags and playing the winning song.

"This is historical and magical! I think I'm going to die. This is the best thing that has happened to Sweden in 13 years!" said 20-year-old Tanja Tuuliainen from Stockholm, wearing a Swedish flag and drinking a bottle of champagne with her girlfriends on the edge of a fountain in downtown Stockholm.

Sweden's entry last won the Eurovision competition in 1999.

Celebrants were bathing in their underwear in the fountain, where Swedes traditionally celebrate major sporting event wins.

Hundreds were singing "We're going up up up up up!!!", repeating a line from Loreen's song.

The Eurovision Song Contest has been a launching pad for international careers. Swedish pop group Abba became famous after winning in 1974 with "Waterloo" and Canada's Celine Dion took top honors in 1988 for Switzerland.

To promote talent over politically and geographically motivated bloc voting, professional judges now account for 50 percent of a performer's score.

The other half comes from telephone and SMS votes received by each contestant, with fans unable to vote for their own country's entry.

As winner, Sweden will host the next Eurovision contest.

The farm's distributor and retail grocers such as Kroger and Wal-Mart that sold the tainted produce also have been sued.
