Shields, Rays end Red Sox's 9-game winning streak (AP)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. ? James Shields delivered a message to surging Boston with his major league-leading third shutout of the season.

The Red Sox may be sitting on top of the AL East standings following a slow start, however the defending division champion Tampa Bay Rays expect to be there when it's all said and done.

Shields pitched his fourth complete game of the season, cooling Boston's red-hot offense and helping the Rays end the first-place Red Sox's nine-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night.

In addition to cutting into their deficit in the division to 3 1/2 games, the third-place Rays ruined a Tropicana Field homecoming for Carl Crawford, their ex-teammate who signed a $142 million, seven-year contract with Boston after helping Tampa Bay win the division two of the past three seasons.

"Yes, we are the defending American League East champs and we plan on defending it, recapturing the flag again," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "Don't let anybody think anything differently."

Crawford went 0 for 3 with one strikeout against Shields (6-4), who allowed five hits, walked three and struck out five. He grounded out with the bases loaded in the first, fouled out in the fourth and fanned on a 12-pitch at-bat in the seventh.

Justin Ruggiano homered off knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (3-2) in the fifth. Tampa Bay added an unearned run without getting a hit in the sixth, when Evan Longoria walked and eventually scored from third on catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia's second passed ball of the inning. Casey Kotchman and John Jaso drove in runs charged to reliever Tommy Hottovy in the eighth.

The Red Sox outscored the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays 83-36 during the longest winning streak in the majors this year. The Rays cooled them despite getting just four hits off Wakefield, who also walked five and struck out two in seven innings.

Shields, tied with Philadelphia's Roy Halladay for the major league lead in complete games, was the biggest reason. He set a franchise record for shutouts in a season, and he's the first AL pitcher to have three shutouts this early in a season since Randy Johnson and David Cone had three by the middle of June in 1994.

"This was a big game for us," the 29-year-old right-hander said. "We've been struggling at home, and to be able to open the series off like that feels really good."

Crawford was a four-time All-Star in nine seasons with the Rays. He was the longest-tenured player in the franchise's relatively brief history and is the team's career leader in batting average (.296), RBIs (592), hits (1,480), doubles (215), triples (105), extra-base hits (424), runs scored (765) and stolen bases (409).

Many in the crowd of 20,972 stood and cheered, while others booed when the 29-year-old left fielder came to bat with the bases loaded in the first inning. He grounded to first base, ending the threat. The Red Sox, who scored 30 runs in their previous two games, would not have many more opportunities against Shields.

"He kept the ball from hitting our bats pretty good," Crawford said. "I know those guys over there, whenever the Red Sox are in town, they take it up a notch. I expected him to pitch one of his best games, and he did."

Rays manager Joe Maddon played down Crawford's return to Tropicana Field. After all, the Rays faced him during spring training as well as during a regular-season series at Fenway Park in April, when Tampa Bay beat the then-struggling Crawford and Red Sox twice to begin a recovery from a slow start of its own.

"Honestly, I hate to disappoint, but it's really not that big of a deal to us. ... I think more of what you're going to see is for the fans," Maddon said. "For us, we've moved on. We've got a bunch of guys that say 'Rays' on the front of their jerseys and that's the group I'm concerned with. Honestly, from our perspective in our dugout, maybe a little with the beginning handshake and stuff, but let's just move this thing along."

Crawford conceded that it did feel strange walking into the stadium for the first time as the member of an opposing team.

"It was a little different," Crawford said. "I still went into the home clubhouse first, just saying hello to everybody."

Even though he's hitting just .243, Crawford has batted .321 over the past 20 games to raise his batting average from .209 and help Boston pull out of an early season funk.

Crawford endured six losing seasons before the Rays turned it around and made an improbable run to the World Series in 2008.

He said he drew on difficult experiences from some of the lean years to pull out of his season-opening slump with the Red Sox. He also had nice things to say about the third-place Rays.

"I think they're still a dynamic team. They have pitching. They have Longoria in the middle of the lineup. They play good defense. They have a winning attitude. They have a positive manager that makes them believe they can beat anybody," Crawford said. "They're still a very good team. You have to be careful with them."

Notes: Boston's Jacoby Ellsbury has an 11-game hitting streak. ... 'Book of Mormon' favored to win big at Tonys (AP)

NEW YORK ? Tony Awards host Neil Patrick Harris will sing and dance, skewer the troubled "Spider-Man" musical and have a fake showdown with Hugh Jackman at Sunday night's ceremony.

The Emmy-winning star of "How I Met Your Mother" revealed those details and more as he led a rehearsal of the star-studded show at the Beacon Theatre.

He and previous Tony host Jackman will have a sing-off and Harris will at one point ride onto the stage aboard a life-size horse puppet from "War Horse," one of the plays heavily nominated.

"The Book of Mormon" goes into the show with 14 Tony nominations, one shy of the record held by "The Producers," and is heavily favored to win at the very least the best musical crown.

The show, by the creators of "South Park" and "Avenue Q," has already been declared the season's best musical by the Outer Critics Circle, the Drama League and the New York Drama Critics' Circle. It has also produced the fastest selling digital release of a cast recording in history.

The musical was the biggest new hit from a Broadway season that saw 42 shows open ? 14 musicals, 25 plays and three specials. Box-office grosses soared to $1.08 billion while attendance reached 12.5 million, both up from last season.

"The Book of Mormon," by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone, follows the travails of two Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda to try to convert locals. If it wins, it would be a considerable achievement for first-time Broadway playwrights Parker and Stone, who created the Emmy Award-winning "South Park" and feature-length films such as "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" and "Team America: World Police."

A mix of high art and low, the Mormon musical pays homage to such stalwarts as "The King and I" and "The Lion King," and references diarrhea and sex with babies. A Mormon sacred book finds its way into a leading character's rectum.

Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the Broadway League, which jointly produces the awards with the American Theatre Wing, saw all the shows this year but was most stunned by "The Book of Mormon" and thinks it shows Broadway's diversity.

"I'm in total shock within 10 minutes," she says. "I can't even believe the things that are coming out of their mouths and I turn around expecting to see everyone in their 20s. And I see people in their 60s just laughing and jumping out of their seats. I'm going, `You know what? You can't call us cookie-cutter.'"

The musical faces the stiffest competition from "The Scottsboro Boys," which received 12 Tony nominations. The now-closed musical frames the 1930s-era story of nine black teenagers wrongfully put on death row as an inverted minstrel show.

This year's Tonys are on Manhattan's Upper West Side after the ceremony was forced to leave its longtime home at Radio City Music Hall because Cirque du Soleil moved in. Tony producers picked the 3,000-seat Beacon Theatre, which has only about half as many seats as Radio City. CBS will be televising the event beginning at 8 p.m. EDT.

If CBS censors will be on high alert thanks to the often foul lyrics of "The Book of Mormon," they'll be happy about one decision. Stephen Adly Guirgis' play "The Motherf---- With the Hat" will be referred to simply as "The Mother With the Hat."

Other musicals with large nominations include the revival of "Anything Goes" with Sutton Foster, "Sister Act" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" featuring Daniel Radcliffe and John Laroquette.

In the best play category, the visually stunning British import "War Horse" is up against Jez Butterworth's "Jerusalem," David Lindsay-Abaire's "Good People" and "The Motherf---- With the Hat."

The evening will feature appearances by Alec Baldwin, Christie Brinkley, Matthew Broderick, Harry Connick Jr., Viola Davis, Whoopi Goldberg, Kelsey Grammer, Joel Grey, Marg Helgenberger, Samuel L. Jackson, James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, Jim Parsons, David Hyde Pierce, Daniel Radcliffe, Vanessa Redgrave, Chris Rock, Brooke Shields, Robin Williams, Patrick Wilson and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

There will be performances from all the Tony-nominated musicals ? "Anything Goes," "Catch Me If You Can" with Norbert Leo Butz and Aaron Tveit, "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," "Sister Act" with Patina Miller, "The Book of Mormon" and "The Scottsboro Boys."

Bono and The Edge will introduce a song they wrote for Reeve Carney and Jennifer Damiano from the trouble-plagued "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," which is set to finally open Tuesday and is not eligible for these awards. The two actors sing while being suspended on a platform, but there are no other aerial tricks and Spider-Man himself is nowhere to be found.

Other appearances will come from John Leguizamo, the cast of last year's Tony-winning musical "Memphis," and the cast of "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" with Nick Adams, Tony Sheldon and Will Swenson.

The Tonys will also reassemble the all-star cast of the New York Philharmonic's limited run of "Company," which starred Harris, Stephen Colbert, Jon Cryer, Katie Finneran, Christina Hendricks, Patti LuPone, Martha Plimpton and Anika Noni Rose, among others.

Paul Holleran, head of the National Union of Journalists in Scotland, on Friday accused Scottish police of doing Trump?s bidding in arresting Baxter and seizing his camera equipment when he was making his documentary.

?The film raises some essential questions that should be directed towards the Trump organisation, the Scottish government and Grampain Police,? Holleran said in a letter to the Sunday Herald newspaper in Scotland.

?As a Church we never yield to the status quo and never should stop provoking or taking people beyond the status quo,? said Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the summit co-organizer Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, told Vatican Radio June 10.?

He added that the Church should remind people of ?the possibility of looking at things differently than to how they are used to do.?

??I guess that?s what it means to evangelize. To invite people to a level they?ve either not thought of before.?

The discussion will largely focus on Pope Benedict XVI?s 2009 encyclical ?Caritas in Veritate,? whose title means ?Charity in Truth.? In the midst of global financial collapse, the encyclical advocated an ethics of finance rooted in the dignity of the person and the pursuit of the common good.

?I suppose there should be openness on the part of all to hear something new, to be challenged with something new,? the Ghanaian cardinal said about summit attendees arriving in Rome next week.

Iran forces attack protesters: opposition website (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran's opposition website Sahamnews said security forces attacked pro-reform demonstrators gathering in Tehran on Sunday to mark the anniversary of the 2009 disputed presidential election.

Witnesses said thousands of security personnel were deployed in Tehran to prevent a revival of the mass anti-government rallies that erupted after the 2009 vote.

"Security forces attacked the crowd with electric batons ... in the Vali-e Asr street to disperse the demonstrators," Sahamnews said.

Another opposition website, Kaleme, said "hundreds of demonstrators" were arrested by the security forces.

Opposition websites had called for a "silent rally" to mark the vote, which reformists say was rigged to secure the hardline president's win. Authorities say the election was the "healthiest" since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution.

The Sahamnews website also said supporters of the opposition gathered in other parts of the city.

"Shopkeepers were ordered to close down their shops ... hundreds of people have gathered in other areas of Tehran," the website said.

Opposition leaders Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi, who spearheaded protests against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re- election in 2009, had been placed under house arrest after calling for a rally on February 14.

Two people were shot dead at the February 14 rally, during which thousands of the opposition supporters took to the streets in defiance of a heavy security presence to back uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, that toppled their leaders.

Iran, which crushed its own anti-government protests in 2009, says uprisings in the Arab world were inspired by the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution but are worried about revival of anti-government unrest.

Iranian leaders have portrayed the Arab Spring as an "Islamic awakening," while avoiding to support the popular uprising in Syria, its most important ally in the region.

Tehran has strongly condemned military deployment by Saudi Arabia to quell unrest in Bahrain. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are both allied to the West.

Report: Heart attack, drugs killed Andy Irons

When surfing superstar Andy Irons was found dead in a hotel room in November, dengue fever was initially suspected. Irons had withdrawn from a competition in Puerto Rico, saying he had contracted an illness while in Portugal.

Now we know that one of the world?s great surfers died at age 32 from a heart attack caused by atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, a condition that normally doesn?t present until the late 40s.

But that?s not the end of the story: According to the long-delayed autopsy report, a secondary cause of Irons? death was ?acute mixed drug ingestion.? Irons had cocaine and methamphetamine in his system, according to a toxicology report. After Irons was found dead in his room at an airport hotel in Dallas, while on a layover before heading home to Hawaii, police found a prescription anxiety medication in his room, as well as a sleep aid and methadone, a narcotic used to ease the withdrawal from opiate addiction.

Suffering from atherosclerosis at such a young age could be caused by a variety of factors, including family history, smoking, high cholesterol and hypertension, but drug use could also worsen the condition, says Dr. Michael Miyamoto, a Mission Viejo cardiologist.

?The stimulant drugs may worsen or make manifest underlying heart disease,? said Miyamoto, who has helped research ancient mummies in Egypt to better understand atherosclerosis. ? In addition, these drugs can have toxic effects on the heart muscle, sometimes leading to the development of cardiomyopathy,? or disease of the heart muscle.

Irons? death shocked the surfing world. In Orange County, an emotional paddle-out was held in mid-November in Huntington Beach, and thousands turned out to honor him. View a slide show of the paddle-out.

The autopsy report was provided to The New York Times by a publicist for Irons? family. The report was conducted by the Tarrant County (Texas) Medical Examiner?s office and won?t be publicly released until June 20.

The report was delayed out of concern for Irons? widow Lyndie, who was eight months? pregnant with their son Andy Axel Irons at the time of the surfer?s death.

A statement released by the family and posted on our beach blog attributes Irons? death to natural causes. The family had asked Dr. Vincent Di Maio, a forensic pathologist from San Antonio, to review the autopsy, and he disputed the finding that drugs played a role.

From the family?s statement:

As we are not doctors, we have no choice but to accept that two respected pathologists have come to different conclusions about a secondary contributing cause of death.

However, the family would like to address the findings of prescription and non-prescription drugs in Andy?s system. Andy was prescribed Xanax and Zolpidem (Ambien) to treat anxiety and occasional insomnia ? a result of a bipolar disorder diagnosed by his family doctor at age 18. This is when Andy first began experiencing episodes of manic highs and depressive lows. The family believes Andy was in some denial about the severity of his chemical imbalance and tended to blame his mood swings on himself and his own weaknesses, choosing to self-medicate with recreational drugs.

Members of his family, close friends, and an industry sponsor intervened over the years to help Andy get clean, but the effort to find balance in his life was certainly complicated by his chemical makeup.

Clinton Urges Preparation For A Post-Gadhafi Libya

Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's days are numbered, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told an international conference on Libya on Thursday, and the U.S. and others need to prepare for a post-Gadhafi Libya.

Diplomats from more than 20 nations met in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, to discuss the endgame and to boost support for the opposition.

Ali Tarhouni, who runs the Libyan rebels' finances, paced the halls anxiously as U.S., European and Arab leaders met in the vast and opulent Emirates Palace Hotel. They have been trying to figure out ways to funnel money to the rebels' Transitional National Council, and Tarhouni says he's been hearing only promises of help for months.

"Our people are dying," Tarhouni says. "We're in a war, and it's been almost four months now and nothing materialized so far."

It is beyond frustrating, he says. "We are a proud people and I'm not begging. This is our money that we're asking for."

Control Of Libyan Assets

Diplomats acknowledge that there have been lots of legal problems getting some of the Libyan assets that have been frozen to the rebels to help them run their government in Benghazi. Tarhouni says he'd like loans, using frozen assets as collateral.

The Transitional National Council promised, in writing, that any loans will be paid back by a future Libyan government. And the host of the meeting, Emirati Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said a new financial mechanism is finally up and running for some aid to flow.

"What we've taken today in the UAE is a step forward. People could argue other ways that we haven't done enough, but I think time will show that we are doing the right thing at the right time," he said.

Qatar and Kuwait promised to pitch in nearly $300 million, a mix of loans and gifts. Italy is also offering several hundred million dollars in loans to help the transitional council, and Turkey said it would give $100 million.

Clinton says the U.S. and other coalition partners are gaining more confidence in the rebel government, the Transitional National Council, or TNC.

"We have seen a great deal of improvement in the efforts of the TNC. We are obviously doing all we can to assist them in better organizing themselves and building those institutions that any state needs. But they know and we know there's a long road ahead," Clinton said.

The End Of Gadhafi?

But they may not have much time. Clinton believes there's growing momentum against Gadhafi's regime. Australia's foreign minister, Kevin Rudd, says that was the general sense in the room at the conference in Abu Dhabi.

"There have been, obviously, multiple feelers from the Gadhafi regime to various members of the international community coming every other day. In our view collectively, this represents growing desperation on the part of the regime as we believe it enters its end period," Rudd says.

NATO has stepped up bombing raids in Tripoli, and Clinton says there's increasing military, financial and diplomatic pressure on Gadhafi, with even Russia and China reaching out to the rebels now.

"We have very good reason to believe that time is on our side, so long as we sustain the pressure," Clinton said.

Asked about exile options for Gadhafi, Clinton would only say there are numerous and continuing discussions but no clear way forward yet. The so-called contact group will meet next in Istanbul in July.

Libya was not the only issue on Clinton's agenda in Abu Dhabi; she also consulted Gulf countries about the conflict in Yemen. President Ali Abdullah Saleh was wounded in an explosion last week and is still getting medical treatment in Saudi Arabia.

The U.S. and other Gulf states are trying, Clinton said, to promote a peaceful and orderly transition in Yemen. She wouldn't comment on reports that the U.S. has stepped up drone attacks against a terrorist group based there.

Careers Work: Help, Advice, Counselling, Guidance And Information

I was a Careers Adviser for the Humberside service in England, UK, for 24 years. So, I have been mulling over whether to write an article about career choice and advice. After all, I might as well put all that experience to good use.

Using Google for careers advice, information and guidance

Today I Googled words like careers, counselling, connexions etc. Well, in the UK the Connexions Service (of which careers is a part) still exists and they have their own national website. There is a rider on it, though, that their views may not quite match those of our newish Coalition government. However, they still run their Jobs 4 U database, which is based on a good model built by COIC and associates from about the 1970s. Connexions is for 13-19 year olds BUT its job information is good for people of any age. Simply put: want information? Google it. The web is an excellent source of information, dare I say sometimes better than a human adviser?s memory. Jobs 4 U cannot surely have a monopoly any more (if ever) on information. I could not find any sign of a coordinated careers service in the states, sorry guys. Some American Universities do have a service though.

See a Careers Adviser or Worker for help, counselling, choice making skills

Actually I preferred to call myself a Careers Worker rather than adviser. More than that, I often operated as a ?counsellor?.? People don?t like to think of themselves as being ?counselled? as it implies there is something wrong with them. So I never told anyone they were being counselled. It is all about helping wherever help is needed.

This is what the Trent Nottingham Careers Course trained? me to do (amongst other things). Professors Carl Rogers and Gerard Egan gave us ?client-centred?, ?non-directive counselling, which is all about being helpful. All that happens is that you share your thoughts with your careers worker so that you can decide your career and get on the right path towards your goal. Of course, thinking a bit before you see that worker doesn?t do any harm. Yet a problem shared is a problem halved. Only humans can do this.

Naturally, Ken Roberts and his structural-functionalist supporters will turn round and say, nice, but what about a job. Well Connexions does advertise job and training vacancies. So does Job Centre Plus or whatever in the UK. When I worked for Connexions, however, I always felt this was our Achilles Heel. Of course, there is always Google?

Further thoughts

Another possible Achilles Heel, if you can have two, is that some see the client-centred approach as a cop-out. A CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) counsellor I worked with (called Paul Martin) certainly dismissed Rogers and company as any good. Then again some Careers Advisers might use some CBT with clients.

Connexions is primarily a 13-19 service and I?m not sure whether they see ?Adult? clients to any great extent. In the UK that means you may have to try Jobcentre Plus (who once employed OGUs (Occupational Guidance Units). Indeed an OGU led me to the Careers Service in 1980.

Some Advisers use Careerscape, Kudos and other computer programmes to help with making choices and getting information. In the past we used CASCAID and the Morrisby profile ? special tests to help this process. Enough for now.
