PureCloud

There is nothing small about the network issues small and mid-sized businesses face. They face the same threats as larger enterprises, but generally have just the fraction of resources?smaller budgets and smaller IT teams with less security expertise?available to a larger enterprise. For small businesses, the PureCloud service from nCircle is exactly what they need: an enterprise-ready vulnerability scanner to build a prioritized list of vulnerabilities and weaknesses in the network.

Regular network audits can uncover vulnerabilities in the network, identify rogue or outdated systems, and create an accurate picture of what the network currently looks like. PureCloud takes the pain out of network security by giving administrators actionable steps to remediate underlying issues before something goes wrong.

Getting Started
As PureCloud is software as a service, there is no hardware to deploy and no software to install. I signed up on the nCircle Website and I immediately saw the dashboard view for the platform. All a business really needs for PureCloud is a Web browser with an up-to-date version of Flash installed.

While it is free to sign up with PureCloud, nCircle offers an annual subscription of $49 for unlimited scanning per IP address. While that can easily add up, it's in line with other competing products. Customers can also sign up for a monthly subscription, and they start as low as $4.90 per IP address per month. Volume discounts are also available.

Administrators can click on "unlock" within the generated report to sign up for the subscription and see the complete list of issues. The service provides full results for free for one IP address. For most businesses, having just results for one IP address won't be useful; they will need to sign up for a full subscription.

The Dashboard View
The dashboard is split into two parts: scan jobs and charts. A scorecard on the left compares the average risk score for the systems in my network with the average risk score for "Benchmark," as calculated by nCircle. A pie chart on the right displays the percentage of systems in my network with no vulnerabilities, or low, medium priority, and high priority vulnerabilities. Another pie chart displays the same breakdown for the Benchmark. nCircle collects security metrics from its customers to calculate the Benchmark, which is used as a baseline comparison on PureCloud. The charts are great for a quick view of how the network measures up to others.

The top part of the dashboard displays all scan jobs that have already been defined, and the IP addresses associated with each job. I could click on the IP address to see a detailed report, or just look at the overall security score assigned to each system as part of the last scan. The table also displays machine information, such as the hostname and the installed operating system. I wished there was a way to update those fields for the ones PureCloud couldn't identify. For example, while the scanner found two laptops on my network, it was not able to detect they were Ubuntu Linux machines. The resulting network inventory could have been more useful if I could have updated some of those fields.

Running the Scan
With PureCloud, organizations don't have to make any changes to the firewall, or worry about deploying hardware or software onto the network. There is no need to push out software agents on every single device. All you need to do before running an internal scan is to install a "connector," a piece of software which establishes a virtual private network (VPN) connection between the computer and the PureCloud scanning engine hosted on nCircle servers. The PureCloud Secure Connectors created a secure encrypted tunnel between my network and the PureCloud scanner, so that all the data stayed within that tunnel.

An internal scan would inventory all my devices, identify where they are vulnerable (such as giving guest accounts too many privileges) and provide recommendations on how to fix the issues. The perimeter scan would check my network from the outside to identify any weakness that would make me vulnerable to attack.

I could always rerun the scan job or schedule it for a later date through the dashboard. I could create new scans via a wizard where I defined a list of hostnames or IP addresses to scan. When I began a scan job, I was told I would receive an email when the scan was complete. I appreciated that I didn't have to repeatedly check back to see if I was done or not. If I was feeling particularly impatient, I could still check the dashboard and watch the scan in progress.

After the Scan
The strength of PureCloud is most evident in its reports. The email notification has a link to the generated PDF report as well as a one-line summary of how many vulnerabilities the scan found. The PDF report shows the same charts as the dashboard, and then uses red, yellow, green indicators to indicate which vulnerabilities need attention first.

I ran PureCloud on my mixed OS test network of 11 systems and found 34 vulnerabilities. A perimeter scan uncovered another 10, including an expired SSL certificate. PureCloud uses the same scan engine as the company's flagship i360 product, which means the platform can scan for over 70,000 network conditions, according to nCircle.

I could see at a glance which IP addresses had the most vulnerabilities and its associated security score. PureCloud automatically categorized the issues into "low" "medium" and "high" priorities. Clicking on the address opened up a detailed report with information about the weaknesses and steps to take to remediate the issue.

PureCloud has a number of competitiors in the vulnerability scanning space, but the closest one is possibly the Retina CS from BeyondTrust (as part of the eEye Digital Security acquisition). Retina is agent-based and has a much more extensive set of features, making it a bit more complex than PureCloud. Both are excellent, but each aims for a different segment of the market and, each has its own use case.

Exactly What the SMB Needs
It's quite evident nCircle thought carefully about what the small business segment needs from a vulnerability assessment tool, and delivered an easy-to-use platform. PureCloud provides users with information on how many issues are on the device, and the severity of each. The easy-to-read nature of the reports means even non-vulnerability gurus can follow along and take action to secure the network. This is particularly helpful for that lone IT person tasked with keeping the network secure on top of all the other things on the to-do list. As vulnerability scanners go, PureCloud is quite robust and earns every bit of its four-star rating.

PureCloud doesn't have the breadth of features as BeyondTrust's Retina CS, but administrators looking for something quick and easy to get started will find that PureCloud delivers exactly what they need.

Netflix Ireland, UK score deals to carry previous seasons of key Warner-distributed shows

Netflix Ireland, UK score deal to carry previous seasons of Fringe, 3 other Warner TV shows

Hot on the heels of a deal for Canada, Netflix and Warner Bros. have spread their newfound affection for each other to a multi-year, exclusive agreement for Ireland and the UK. Both island nations are getting streaming access to past seasons of four Warner-distributed TV shows, with availability staggered over the next several months. The Vampire Diaries is first out of the gate, with three seasons coming to Netflix on December 1st; five seasons of Gossip Girl follow on March 1st, while less definite schedules have all of Chuck and four seasons of Fringe appearing sometime in 2013. The arrangement isn't quite as ideal as it would be if episodes appeared as they aired, but it's a welcome expansion for a young regional service that's still locked in a battle for supremacy.

Finding who hosts a domain name - Web Hosting Talk

The easiest way is to find the registrar as above, sign up for a free account with the registrar, then ask your ex-colleague to push the domain name to your account there.

I understand life's not always that simple. You might have to remind him that theft is a crime that police prosecute. You might even be able to get a nice copper to have a chat with him if it comes to that. If even that doesn't work you might be able to get a mean one to talk to him.

As techhive said, the registrar will probably sort if for you if necessary as well. It would help if you have proof that the name was originally bought with company funds (credit card receipt, etc).

I don't understand that some people think the web is outside the law (or that they can leave their morality at the login screen).

Texas Millionaire Known For His ?Cadillac Ranch? Charged With ...

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) ? Stanley Marsh 3, the eccentric millionaire artist best known for his ?Cadillac Ranch? art display along an interstate in the Texas Panhandle, was charged Wednesday with 11 felony counts of molesting children.

The 74-year-old turned himself in at a county jail after an arrest warrant was issued, accusing him of molesting two teenagers in 2010. His arrest follows the filing of several lawsuits against him for allegedly paying 10 teens for sex acts.

The charges could go before a grand jury in the next few weeks or soon after the first of the year, special prosecutor Matt Powell said.

?This is the beginning of the process,? Powell said. ?This is what we felt like we needed to do.?

According to criminal complaints filed in Potter County, Marsh had the teens engage in sexual acts, including masturbation and oral sex, on three days in 2010. He was charged with six counts of child sexual assault and five counts of sexual performance by a child.

Marsh?s criminal attorneys, Paul Nugent and Heather Peterson of Houston, denied the charges, saying in a statement that the teens in the civil cases waited until Marsh suffered a massive stroke last year to move forward with a plan ?to become multimillionaires? by signing with a Houston personal injury attorney.

?The investigation into the group?s claims is far from complete,? the attorneys wrote in their statement. ?There should be no premature rush to judgment. Stanley Marsh 3 is not guilty of the group?s allegations, and will fight as vigorously as his declining health permits.?

The six lawsuits claim Marsh paid the boys, ages 15 and 16, for sexual acts. One claimed that Marsh provided him drugs and alcohol, bought him two cars, and paid him at several points during a year in sums of as much as $10,000.

Marsh?s civil attorney, Kelly Utsinger, has denied those allegations. He did not immediately return a call seeking comment on Wednesday?s criminal complaints.

The teens? Houston-based civil attorney, Anthony Buzbee, said two of the teens went to police in late summer before the lawsuits were filed, but two others didn?t speak with investigators until early November ? about the time Marsh?s offices were searched. One teen?s mother sought out a civil attorney when she didn?t hear back from police, according to the lawsuits.

Marsh is probably best known for planting 10 brightly painted Cadillacs nose down along Interstate 40 in the Panhandle in the 1970s. The cars, ranging from a 1948 club coupe to a 1963 sedan and gathered from junkyards, private collectors and used car lots, have since become a pop art landmark.

Visitors through the years have splattered them with graffiti and in 2005 they were coated in pink to honor breast cancer victims, survivors and their families. Marsh also has painted them black and yellow to honor the passing of longtime friends.

An Amarillo native and philanthropist, Marsh and his wife have donated to local art and education causes. After he suffered the massive stroke and a series of smaller ones, his wife was appointed his guardian.

Marsh was indicted on charges of indecency with a child in 1996, but the charges were eventually dismissed. That same year Marsh acknowledged no wrongdoing in a settlement with a youth who claimed Marsh sexually abused him.

In 2001, parties in four lawsuits that alleged imprisonment, sexual misconduct and harassment of teens were settled. Marsh apologized but no other details were made public.

Winter Weather ? Possible Homeowners and Umbrella Insurance ...

5. desember - December 5It isn?t December yet, but Connecticut has already had its first tastes of winter snow.

Thankfully, it has melted fairly quickly, but that trend won?t last much longer.

We are likely to see more, heavier snow this winter, which means plenty of shoveling, snow blowing and de-icing. ?The Keating Agency wants to know, ?Are you ready??

Be Shovel Ready

When the white stuff falls, it?s time to grab the shovel.? Remember to dress warmly but before you head outdoors, the video from Eight West News offers up suggestions for proper shoveling techniques.? As the doctor in the video says, make certain to pace yourself and use proper form.

Watch Your Step!

Colder temperatures inevitably mean icy walkways.? This story from KSPR television in Missouri states that falls are the number one cause of injuries among children and adults at the local trauma center.

If someone is injured by a fall on your property, you could be liable for medical costs and more.? Having an Umbrella Policy in addition to your Homeowner Insurance can cover your legal expenses if you are sued.

In addition to clearing and salting walkways and driveways, some steps you can take to protect yourself from winter falls are:

?Assume that all wet, dark areas on pavements are slippery.

?Wear shoes or boots with non-slip rubber or neoprene with grooved soles for the best traction.

Use your vehicle for support when getting in and out of it.

Keep your hands out of your pockets so you can balance yourself, and catch yourself if you fall.

At the Keating Agency, we hope you will be safe this winter.? As your local independent insurance agent for 40+ years, we are here to answer your questions and help you choose the right insurance to protect all of the things that are important to you.

EE increases data caps for 4G mobile broadband plans, introduces SIM-only 30-day option

Android Central

EE, the UK's only 4G LTE mobile network, has announced that it's increasing the amount of data available to its mobile broadband customers -- that's anyone using one of EE's data-only plans with a compatible device.

Customers on a 2GB allowance will see that increased to 3GB, 3GB users will get bumped up to 5GB, and 5GB customers will have their data cap increased all the way to 8GB. Monthly fees will remain the same.

EE is also launching a SIM-only data-only plan on a rolling 30-day contract, which offers 5GB for £15.99 per month. EE doesn't currently sell any 4G-capable Android tablets, but if you've already picked one up (and it supposed LTE on 1800MHz), you'll be able to use it with this new price plan. To sweeten the deal, EE says the first month of service will be free for those signing up before Dec. 23.

Unfortunately the new price plans don't extend to EE's smartphone SIMs, which require a minimum commitment of 12 months on SIM-only, or 24 months if you include a phone.

More details in the presser after the break.

They're back! Holiday office parties return

1 hr.

Unpack the reindeer sweater, ?tis the holiday party season again.

After years forswearing year-end celebrations because of belt tightening, more companies are feeling festive enough to host holiday gatherings, according to several recent surveys.

Close to 83 percent of 100 human resources managers said their companies will host an event this year, including 10 percent who didn?t have a party last year because of the economy, according to preliminary results from the annual Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., holiday party survey.

Don?t expect an extravaganza. Few companies are going back to the champagne and caviar affairs common before the recession.

Instead, they?re opting for more modest or original activities -- a potluck lunch, after-hours party at the office, or volunteering at a food bank followed by dinner at a local restaurant. ?There appears to be a move from the more traditional night out, with dinner and a dance band,? says Robert Hosking, executive director at Robert Half International?s OfficeTeam division, which conducts an annual office party survey. ?I think companies are becoming more creative with this, and allowing employees to come back with recommendations.?

Most people like holiday parties. At companies that hold parties, 79 percent of managers and 75 percent of employees say they enjoy them, according to OfficeTeam?s 2012 office holiday party survey.

But even if office parties turn you into Mr. Grinch, you can?t afford to skip them, says business etiquette expert Barbara Pachter. ?Think of it as a business opportunity,? she says, ?because the people you meet may be interviewing you in three or six months? for a new position or promotion.

If your company is throwing some kind of shindig this season, here?s the experts? advice for making the most of it:

Don?t talk shop. Conversations about work are OK, in moderation. Parties are a chance to get to know co-workers on a different level. ??You can talk about what people are doing for the holidays, what vacations they have coming up,? movies, plays, or sports you or your kids play, Pachter says. ?Then you have a common bond.? Three things Pachter recommends steering clear of: sex, politics and religion. And as hard as it can be, don?t gossip about co-workers. If you get stuck, ?You can listen, but don?t contribute.?

Mingle. Move beyond your usual circle of co-workers and introduce yourself to people you might not run into otherwise. ?It?s a great place to network with more senior people who could influence your career,? Hosking says.?

Leave the thigh-high dress and ripped jeans at home. Think business casual. If you think something?s too suggestive or casual, it probably is, Pachter says.

Look like you?re having fun, even if you?re not. Body language can reveal a lot about a person?s attitude. You might be there under duress, but you don?t need to show it. Frowning, crossing your arms or sitting at the table texting will?broadcast how much fun you?re not having, Pachter says. To boost your confidence talking to higher ups, practice a few ?power poses? before you go, suggests career coach Susan Joyce, in this blog post.

Don?t get plowed. If you?re not a party person, it?s easy to drink too much to make yourself feel more comfortable. Don?t.? A participant in one of the etiquette seminars Pachter teaches shared the story of a young man who got drunk at his company Christmas party, told off his boss and got fired on the spot. ?The next day he couldn?t understand why his badge didn?t work,? she says. If you do over-imbibe, accept any morning-after ribbing. ?It usually blows over,? Pachter says, ?but if you get defensive, they?ve found your vulnerability and it?ll tend to stick around.?

Take pictures, but ask before posting anything online. Despite years of warnings about the damage people can do to themselves and their friends by posting pictures of potentially compromising situations on Facebook or elsewhere, it still happens all the time, Pachter says. Always ask.

Brief your spouse. If you?re bringing a significant other, give them the 411 in advance on co-workers you work with that they should know.

Don?t cut out early. If it?s a dinner, stay through dessert. If there?s dancing, stick around for at least one song.? ?If everyone in your department is staying, you should stay awhile too,? Pachter says.

New Apple iMac Models To Be Available In India On 30th November; Will Come With 21.5" And 27" Screens

Apple has announced the India availability date of its new iMac models as 30th November. As you may know, iMacs are Apple's all-in-one (AIO) desktop computers in which all the PC parts are within the sleek body ? which looks like just a monitor. The wireless keyboard and mouse are the only external components. The redesigned iMacs, announced last month, come in an aluminium and glass enclosure just 5 mm thick at the edges, although there is a bulge in the middle. The displays supposedly have 75% less reflection, so these models should be glare-free compared with their predecessors.

All the new models feature 8 GB of 1600 MHz RAM. The 1 TB hard drive combines with a 128 GB SSD using a technology known as Fusion Drive, for fast performance without storage space constraints. There are two 21.5" models. The first, with a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 CPU and NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M, costs Rs 86,000. The other, with a 2.9 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 CPU and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M is priced at Rs 100,000. The new 27" iMac also has two variants: A 2.9 GHz quad-core Core i5 and GeForce GTX 660M at Rs 123,000, and the more expensive one 3.2 GHz quad-core Core i5 and GeForce GTX 675MX at an MSRP of Rs 135,000.

Apple mentions that these can be upgraded with Core i7 CPUs if you want to add firepower. In addition to Mac OS X, the new iMacs come with iLife, iWork, and other licensed software. Despite all the good stuff, we think the prices are a little too high. Apple fans will surely disagree on some grounds or the other. What do you say?

Six students charged after attack on bus driver

Six middle school students in Richmond, Va., were suspended after they allegedly attacked their school bus driver. WWBT's Ashley Monfort reports.

By Daniel Arkin, NBC News

Six students who allegedly assaulted a Richmond, Va., middle school bus driver Tuesday have been arrested and charged, according to the Richmond Police Department.?

The unidentified students face felony aggravated assault and assault by mob charges, police said. A seventh student was suspended in connection with the incident.?

Richmond City school administrators said the group of students attacked a bus driver on the way to Albert Hill Middle School at approximately 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. The alleged assault left the 55-year-old male bus driver with serious face and head injuries, according to NBC12, a station in Richmond.

According to the police report, the alleged attack forced the driver to stop the vehicle and call the police.?

"It's a dangerous position to be in," bus monitor Hilda Davis told NBC12. "To be attacked like that is a terrible thing to anybody. I feel all these drivers' pain. You know, it's a risk and somebody needs to be held accountable. I don't like this at all."

For more, visit NBC12.com

The mother of one of the alleged attackers told Richmond's CBS6 station that the incident began when students on the bus threw crayons at the bus driver. She claims that the driver became agitated and started hitting her son, which triggered the assault.

Police have not specified a motive for the alleged attack.

Richmond Public Schools spokeswoman Felicia Cosby said school officials are continuing to investigate the attack in cooperation with local police.?

"We are taking this matter seriously and are working expeditiously with the Richmond Police Department to conduct a full investigation,? Cosby told CBS6. ?Once we complete our investigation, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. The safety and security of both our students and staff are paramount to our mission of promoting student achievement. The alleged misconduct will not be tolerated and those who exhibit such conduct will meet swift and appropriate discipline."

AMNESTY *RED ALERT* REPUBLICANS TO 'CODIFY' OBAMA AMNESTY INTO LAW - GOP lawmakers float immigration reform plan

Mr. Kyl and Ms. Hutchison said while they opposed Mr. Obama?s move, their bill essentially codifies his actions into law. GOP Sens. Jon Kyl and Kay Bailey Hutchison said they have introduced a bill that would reward those who take college classes or join the military. They worked on the legislation with Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, and Sen. Marco Rubio.

Saying they want to get the conversation on immigration reform started, top Senate Republicans on Tuesday introduced a version of the so-called ?Dream Act? to grant young illegal immigrants legal status in the US, though not giving them a special path to citizenship.

GOP Sens. Jon Kyl and Kay Bailey Hutchison said they have introduced a bill that would reward those who take college classes or join the military.

By Stephen Dinan
The Washington Times
Tuesday, November 27, 2012

?We have got to get this ball rolling,? said Mr. Kyl, an Arizona Republican who is retiring this year. ?We have to have a discussion that is sensible, that is calm.?

Their bill would be more limited than the proposals Democrats have sought, which would have been more generous with a path to citizenship and broader in the number of immigrants it would apply to. But Ms. Hutchison, Texas Republican, said she and Mr. Kyl have tried to accommodate some Democratic lawmakers? concerns.

The legislation would reward students with higher status the further along they are in pursuing their education. Those who earn a four-year college degree or complete military service could apply for a permanent visa that wouldn?t put them on a new path to citizenship, but would allow them to join existing lines by getting married to a U.S. citizen or finding another opportunity to adjust their status.

Mr. Kyl said that, given how prominent marriage is as a way of gaining a path to citizenship, he figures many of those who get legal status would eventually be able to earn green cards, which is the intermediary step before citizenship.

Illegal immigrant youths who were brought to the U.S. by their parents are among the most difficult cases in immigration law. Earlier this year, President Obama announced his administration would stop deporting them and would instead grant them work permits ? though they wouldn?t have any new legal status.

Mr. Kyl and Ms. Hutchison said while they opposed Mr. Obama?s move, their bill essentially codifies his actions into law.

They said they don?t intend for those who get the visas to have access to most government programs or welfare.

The senators said they worked on the legislation with Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, and Sen. Marco Rubio, the Florida Republican who the GOP hopes to be a bridge to the expanding Hispanic population.

Mr. Rubio is not a co-sponsor, but they said he is supportive of the concept and his office confirmed that. Spokesman Alex Conant said Mr. Rubio is still working on his own immigration bill.

?I think we?re supportive of their efforts, but we?ll have our legislation in the new year,? Mr. Conant said.

Google mobilizes users in fight for robots' core values ? paidContent

Google exists because, by and large, it is allowed to excerpt web pages without being held liable as a publisher. Now moves in Germany and Australia threaten both of those core facts.

Its own public policy lobbying is now not enough. Google has taken the rare step of devoting homepage space to urge its German users to oppose government-proposed copyright reforms on its behalf.

Proposed in August and coming up for first reading in the Bundestag this Thursday, the?Leistungsschutzrecht?? or, ancillary copyright ? would give news publishers the exclusive right to control re-uses of their output, requiring others obtain a license even to excerpt.

Google fought back on Tuesday by using a google.de homepage campaign to ask users to complain to elected representatives, casting the issue as one both of fundamental freedoms and of practicality: ?For you, it would be so much more difficult on the internet to find the information that you seek.?Defend your network.?

It is a mark of how seriously Google is taking the threat that it is trying to appeal to users? emotions, enlisting them to fight the proposals. Google argues Leistungsschutzrecht will ?damage the German economy? and ?threaten the diversity of information?.

German publishers have formed their own counter-campaign?

Google is widely thought to be allowed to crawl news stories of which it republishes only excerpts. Emerging law may suggest otherwise ? a Belgian court ruled in 2007 that it did not have the right to run such excerpts and UK copyright authorities this year ruled commercial news aggregators (though not free alternatives like Google News) must pay a license for doing so.

In Belgium, news stories were only returned to Google after a private commercial agreement between it and publishers. So German publishers may feel confident in seeking an equivalent arrangement. And that would challenge the widely-held belief in free online excerpting.

But Germany is not the only front on which Google is facing a threat to these core values on which it operates?

This week an Australian court ruled Google had defamed a man wrongly accused of being a criminal in a web page not hosted by but indexed by Google for its search results.

That contradicts the settled view of many legal jurisdictions that online platforms are not to be considered publishers of information placed by others, though is consistent with other case law that holds such platforms liable from the moment they are made aware of infringing material on their platform.

My colleague, paidContent legal correspondent Jeff Roberts, says this may make it more likely would-be litigants shop for victories in forums like Australia.

France also recently set Google a year?s-end deadline for agreeing to voluntarily pay news publishers ? or ?it may legislate that it must pay a levy for the privilege. Google told French ministers such a compulsion would ?threaten its very existence?.

So now Google is battling challenge to two of its central tenets ? that it is not a publisher and only excerpts parts of articles.

Asked why its members don?t just block Google using robots.txt, the Federation of German Newspaper Publishers on Tuesday said via Twitter: ?Robots.txt is a standard from the internet stone age. Why doesn?t Google want to use (alternative standard) ASCAP, that is the question.?

94% Looper

All Critics (231) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (216) | Rotten (15)

The reasoning behind all this may not reward prolonged inspection, but Johnson is smart enough to press onward with his plot, leaving us with neither the time nor the desire to linger over the logic ...

Writer-director Rian Johnson establishes himself as an original talent who clearly believes storytelling must prevail.

A mind-bending ride that is not afraid to slow down now and again, to explore themes of regret and redemption, solitude and sacrifice, love and loss. It's a movie worth seeing and, perhaps, going back to see again.

Looper has more heart than Brick and the 2008 con-man flick The Brothers Bloom. Both fine achievements, they could also be described as viscerally cerebral.

I'm a sucker for time-travel movies.

Looper felt to me like a maddening near-miss ...

Looper is among the cleverest, most skillfully crafted and entertaining sci-fi thrillers of the past 20 years.

The smartest, most stylish and most outright entertaining science-fiction film of the year.

A thought-provoking, heart-pounding take on the applications and ethics of time travel which, oddly enough, doubles up as a lesson in the importance of good parenting.

This is one of those rare genre movies (like the original TERMINATOR) that reminds us that Sci-Fi can be smart. It's much more than just a bunch of special effects and explosions. It's what all movies should aspire to be.

While it sometimes feels like it's trying to do much, Looper manages to be a creditable and exciting sci-fi flick that homages the past while carving out a unique identity.

Much as he did in Brick, Johnson creates a carefully drawn world in Looper that exists by its own particular set of rules.

... has an irresistible energy and a don't-give-a-damn unpredictability ...

Beautifully crafted, acted and written.

Anchors high-concept thrills and captivating ideas in a world of challenging morality and intricate personal consequences.

Truly imaginative but all the twists and turns make the overall film difficult to follow. Plus Gordon-Levitt has not reached leading man status yet.

Kind of a reverse-"Terminator" without any of James Cameron's wit (or wisdom),

An endlessly creative mind-blowing film that captures everything right about the movie going experience. Johnson conjures up the most imaginative action/science fiction film since 'Inception.'

Part science fiction, part mob movie, and with a nice infusion of dark comedy at just the right moments, Looper is Johnson's best movie yet, and manages to be hugely entertaining, affecting, and thought-provoking.

takes us far beyond the film's high-concept premise into the kind of emotional terrain that too often escapes even the best genre filmmakers

Doesn't quite reach the heights of the lofty ideals that it so ardently seeks to expound, but makes up for this with the sheer thrill of the journey Rian Johnson takes us on.

Ingenious with a fine performance by Emily Blunt, but far too much cold-blooded violence.

Engaging, exciting, and successfully cross-breeding elements of Terminator and even Pet Sematary, Looper is a solid work of palatable science-fiction.

Looper's super. An action-thriller that bothers to have a brain.

Looper may not take us back to the future as satisfyingly as Robert Zemeckis' Marty McFly trilogy or James Cameron's Terminator franchise, but writer-director Rian Johnson does enough right to all but guarantee that he has a future cult film on the books.

The best time travel films play on emotion rather than logic, and once Looper realises this and drops all the tail-chasing about how time travel works it settles into the engrossing action/drama about destiny it should have been from the get go.

Climate change skeptics attack renewable energy mandates

Nov. 27, 2012

Dive Summary:

  • The Heartland Institute, a libertarian think thank skeptical of climate change, has teamed with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) to craft legislation aimed at reversing state renewable energy mandates.
  • The legislation, dubbed the Electricity Freedom Act, is targeting the mandates that exist in 29 states and the District of Columbia; the groups call the renewable standards a "tax on consumers of electricity."
  • ALEC has been trying to combat the mandates for some time, but the inclusion of the Heartland Institute shows the lengths the council is willing reach for to achieve its goal; Heartland has in the past accepted money from oil, gas, and coal companies that compete against renewable energy suppliers.

From the article:

As part of its effort to roll back renewable standards, ALEC is citing economic analyses of state policies co-published by Suffolk University's Beacon Hill Institute and the State Policy Network. Both groups have received donations from foundations funded by the Koch brothers, who support libertarian causes.

The analyses -- which examine current or proposed standards in such states as Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Oregon -- assume that the Energy Information Administration's projected renewable energy price estimates are too low, and that cost-containment measures embedded in state policies will fail. As a result, the reports conclude Kansas' requirement to obtain 20 percent of its electricity will cost consumers $644 million over the next eight years. ...

House Poor: Just Another Learning Experience - Real Estate ...

House Poor:

Just Another Learning Experience

By Homer Guthrie

Expert Homeowner

Have you ever had that free-falling feeling, like someone has blindfolded you, pushed you out of an airplane door at 5,000 feet and all you can do is scream at the top of your lungs and wonder how long it will take before you hit the ground?

That?s what buying a foreclosure felt like.

I was counting on my real estate team, Bea Meriwether, my real estate agent, and Earnest S. Crowe, my mortgage guy, to guide me through the process. After all, they were the ones who had talked me into it. They said I would make eight percent or better and I would learn a lot. They were half right.

Bea had her eye on a sweet little bank-owned split-level not far from my home in Mirage Mills, a suburb widely known as the Chernobyl of American real estate because we live in the epicenter of the foreclosure crisis. I had to close out my 401K to pay for it and by the time the check arrived, the house was gone. So Ernest had another idea.

?Let?s play poker with the big boys,? he winked at me. ?That?s where the real deals are.?

That didn?t sound like a very good idea to me. I?m a terrible poker player. When I try to bluff, my voice turns squeaky and gives me away.

Ernest?s ?real deals? would be at the next sheriff?s auction of foreclosures, a popular event in Mirage Mills. In most counties, sheriff?s auctions are just a few guys meeting outside a courthouse once a month. But in Mirage Mills, dozens of people show up to watch serious investors spend tens of thousands of dollars on foreclosures they had seen only from the street. Most of the crowd consists of carpenters, plumbers, electricians, roofers and landscapers hoping to get hired to fix the messes that the new owners will soon discover.

Ernest got a list of the foreclosures to be in the next auction and the three of us toured the houses up for bid. To my way of thinking, if you?ve seen one house with a line of laundry out the back because the dryer is busted and a dirt yard packed hard by little bare feet and blistering sun, you?ve probably seen them all. Bea and Ernest, on the other hand, unanimously felt that 12765 Prosperity Way was the deal of the day, bound to make some smart guy a potful of money. The way they added it up on my kitchen table, I was going do a whole lot better than eight percent.

So when the big day came, I was standing at the courthouse steps with a cashier?s check for nearly all the money I had to my name. Both Bea and Ernest and other appointments that morning and were late. Felicity went to get coffee, leaving me alone with several other guys in the middle of the crowd, when a county bureaucrat appeared and started rattling off case numbers and addresses from a clipboard. When nobody bid on any of the homes, they all went ?back to the beneficiary,? whatever that meant. Things got boring. I really needed Felicia?s coffee.

Suddenly the bureaucrat said ?Prosperity Way.? My nerves kicked into overdrive. I knew my team would kill me if I missed this house.

She read the opening bid, which was the minimum amount the bank would take for the foreclosure and looked up.

?First bid?? she asked.

?Yes, please!? I squeaked as loudly as I could squeak.

At that very moment a police car sped past the courthouse with its siren blaring. She didn?t hear me even though I was less than ten feet away.

The siren was still sounding when she asked, ?Second bid??

A big man in sunglasses standing right next to her silently raised two fingers like he was Winston Churchill. Obviously, he was a regular who knew the secret code.

?Mr. Cameron bids two hundred thousand. Last bid. Anyone else?? she asked and quickly looked around. ?No??

Desperate to be heard, I pushed my way in front of her and squeaked into her face so loudly that she had to notice me. No sense playing around with a pro like Cameron, so I bid the limit we had agreed upon. ?Two fifty!?

Cameron took off his dark glasses, gave me a peeved look, laughed sarcastically and muttered ?You gotta be kidding me.? He shook his head at both me and the county bureaucrat to indicate he was done. She acknowledged me at last. She asked for my cashiers? check, took down my name and address, and gave me a receipt and some paperwork. I was the proud owner of a foreclosure that was going to change my life in ways I couldn?t imagine.

I stepped away from the circle of bidders and sighed. It felt good to best the big boys at their own game. Just then Felicity arrived with the coffee. As we sat on a bench and sipped, I told her the good news. Instead of being pleased she was concerned that I had spent so much, so I described my fierce bidding war with Cameron and how I crushed him into dust. ?He wanted it sooooo bad,? I gloated. ?That pretty much confirms that we got a great deal.?

?Oh, my God,? she shouted suddenly when she read the receipt. ?No, you didn?t!?

?Didn?t what??

?Homer, please dear God in heaven please tell me this is not the house you bought.?

?All sales are final. Why??

?You didn?t buy 12765 Prosperity Way. This is a receipt for 12675. Oh, Homer, that?s ten blocks away from the house we wanted!?

Building a Business Website Your Customers Will Love

Building a Business Website Your Customers Will LoveBy now it?s clear that if you have a business, no matter what size, you need a website. A website provides authenticity to your small business, helps customers or potential customers who are researching your products and services, and provides a first line of customer service, even when your business is closed.

Being a businessperson, however, your focus is on creating your product or service and making sure that it is the best possible so your customers will be satisfied. Then how do you know if your website is helping your business or is just another placeholder on the Web??There are three types of visitors that will frequent your site. In order of importance, your site visitors are customers, researchers and browsers. Make sure your website meets the needs of the first two and doesn?t scare the rest away.

Customers as Website Visitors

What are your customers looking for when they visit your website? They are usually looking for contact information and hours of operation because they want to talk to you about a product or service they have already purchased, want to find out information about the product or service they are ordering, or they are trying to get help from you. You must have the following information on?EVERY PAGE OF YOUR WEBSITE where visitors can see it immediately:

  • Phone number
  • Hours of operation (they need to know when they can call)
  • Physical address (if you have a storefront)
  • A link to a contact form where the visitor can send you a message

Everything else is secondary to these vital pieces of information that your customers are looking for. If you don?t have this on every page of your site right now, it should be your top priority to remedy that.

Researchers on Your Website

Visitors who are researching are potential customers. These are the people who are in the market, but haven?t made a purchasing decision yet. They are the lost opportunities that you will never know about who didn?t buy from you because they didn?t find the information they were looking for.

The goal of the researcher is to find out more about the product or service they need, and they are looking for a reason to choose you over your competition. In order to help them make an informed decision (and nudge them in your direction), make sure your website includes the following:

  • clear, concise information about the products and/or services you offer, including pricing
  • information about your business and what you do differently that makes you better than the competition (without mudslinging in their direction)
  • endorsements from previous and current customers ? real stories from real people have a great impact on people looking to purchase a product or service
  • your guarantee

It is very important that you also provide clear navigation, special offers, calls to action and other key components, but without the information listed above, potential customers will just move on.

Browsers on Your Business Website

If they?re not a customer or potential customer, the person who happens to land on your site is just a browser. These people may or may not currently need your product or service, but somehow ended up on your site. Once you?ve catered to the needs of customers and potential customers, you can engage browsers and turn them into promoters by creating contests, interesting designs and other fun marketing campaigns.

If you have a website for your business (and you should), make sure you take care of the needs of your customers and potential customers and turn your website from a placeholder to a valuable tool that works for your business 24 hours a day.

Google adds Drive integration to new Gmail composer, ups attachment limit to 10 gigs

Google adds Drive integration to popup composer, ups attachment limit to 10 gigs

If you've used Gmail to send attachments, chances are you've hit that 25MB limit once or twice. Beginning today, Google is rolling out a new Drive integration feature, letting you insert files that you already have in the cloud, effectively boosting the limit 400 fold to 10 gigs. The feature isn't available to everyone just yet, but if you're using the new composer tool and see the Drive logo in the bottom toolbar, you should be good to go. Simply click the icon and choose your file -- if the intended recipient doesn't already have access, you'll be prompted to give them the nod. And, because the file is already stored in the cloud, any changes you make after the message goes out will be visible to your recipient, effectively letting you tweak that presentation or term paper after the submission deadline has passed. You'll find the full scoop at the source link below.

Koreans worry about safety after toxic factory leak

After a series of malfunctions, slow response time to accidents, and allegations of corruption, many South Koreans are anxious about industrial accidents, in part because of the lack of trust in public officials.

On Sept. 27, a dark cloud of gas came over Kim Sun-mi?s village in the industrial southwest of South Korea. She knew by the acrid smell that something had gone wrong at the nearby cluster of factories.

She and her neighbors were evacuated, but they returned a day later after being told by the local government that the area was safe.

They went on with life for a few days, which meant preparing for Chuseok (Oct. 1), the equivalent of America's Thanksgiving holiday and South Korea's biggest holiday. Family members from across the country gathered at her place.

?No one bothered to tell us anything [more] about it,? says Ms. Kim, adding that, she didn?t see or hear anything on TV or the radio that indicated there was anything to worry about.??

It was only four days later, after her kids happened upon?an article on an Internet news portal that the explosion at?the nearby Hube Global factory had caused the discharge of eight tons of hydrofluoric acid, an extremely dangerous substance that, if inhaled, can stay in the human body for up to 20 years and has been reported to cause a range of serious health problems, some of which don?t show up?for years.

Kim and her neighbors had no idea that the dangerous gas was still lingering in the area and that they had been exposed all that time. The residents doubt anything more would have been done by the government if they hadn?t immediately pressed to be evacuated, despite the fact that Korean companies are supposed to have emergency plans and work in close conjunction with the local government in situations like these.

?Since hydrofluoric gas is classified as toxic material, companies handling such materials are obliged to have accident contingency plans prepared in advance. In the Hube Global case this obligation was not well kept,? says Kim Jeong-soo, deputy director of the nonprofit Citizens' Institute for Environmental Studies.

Slow response

Eleven days after the accident, residents were evacuated. The following day, the national government declared the area an official disaster zone. And more than a month and a half later, an investigation is ongoing, and the 300-some residents who were evacuated are still living in community centers.

The slow government response comes at a time when South Koreans are seriously questioning the safety and the reliability of those entrusted to maintain industrial safety standards. After a series of malfunctions and allegations of corruption, public trust is at a low when it comes to the country?s nuclear power plants. Many are anxious about industrial accidents, in part because of the lack of trust in public officials.

Five?workers?died in the explosion at the Hube Global Factory and 3,000 people sought medical treatment for symptoms associated with the toxic spill, according to the Gumi government and the Korean Federation for Environmental Movement.

The explosion was caused by a leak in a gas tank. A government investigation found that some 122 hectares of crops were ruined, to the tune of?9.27 billion won ($8.5 million), and nearby factories lost some?17.7 billion won ($15.9 million).?

?The government says we can come here, but we can?t eat the fruit. They say the gas is on the crops, but it isn?t in the air, in the earth, or the water. It?s very illogical,? says Hong Jin-pyo, a local farmer who was evacuated to a community center indefinitely along with Kim and her family.
