Reporter accused of plagiarism tells his side of the story | Poynter.

Joe Milliken has spent months trying to get his career back on track, but he says a post I wrote about him is making that difficult.

In March I wrote about a front page column by the editor of the Eagle Times, a small New Hampshire paper that accused Milliken of stealing quotes and passing them off as his own. Then-editor Roger Carroll, no longer with the paper, wrote that, ?If one of my reporters did what Compass Sports Editor Joe Milliken did last week, they?d be fired on the spot.?

Carroll?s issue was that Milliken did not attend the basketball game he wrote about, but his story for the Compass included quotes that had been gathered by one of Carroll?s reporters. Carroll reached out to Milliken and his boss at the Compass to express his concerns. Milliken apologized at the time, but Carroll wanted him to admit to plagiarism. Milliken didn?t believe he plagiarized and declined to admit to that offense.

?I just couldn?t bring myself to look the other way anymore,? Carroll wrote. ?Especially once it became clear ? after a series of maddening email exchanges ? that he would apologize for just about anything, but not for stealing my work.?

I contacted Milliken at the time, but he declined to comment because he said he was looking into his legal options. My post was published with quotes I gathered from Carroll. That was in March.

About a month ago, Milliken contacted me to ask if I could take down the story. He said he?s had difficulty finding work and lost many of his contracts due to Carroll?s accusation, which he says is false. Each time he has an opportunity for a new writing job, the people looking to hire him inevitably come across my post, he said. Milliken believes this results in him not getting the job or assignment.

?The accusations that Carroll made against me have greatly affected both my professional and personal life,? he said in a email interview. ?As a freelance writer working from home, I lost all of my local freelance newspaper accounts (six in all) except for one. In every case, they simply said, ?Joe, we like you, we like your writing and we believe you when you say that you didn?t plagiarize on purpose, but this situation is too ?hot? right now and we have to protect our investment.? ?

Our approach at Poynter.org is to correct stories that are wrong and update stories with new information, but we typically deny requests to unpublish material. We explore alternatives, particularly when the story is accurate and complete but an?embarrassment to a source or subject. We may also update the old story and create a new one, which is what we decided to do in this case once Milliken wanted to talk to us after setting aside his initial plan to sue Carroll, which proved too expensive and unpredictable, he said.

He wants to tell his side of the story and restore his reputation, and I agreed to write a follow-up article with his point of view.

I also reached out to Carroll to see how he now feels about his column on Milliken. Carroll is no longer at the paper, but the staff there forwarded my questions to him by email. He hasn?t replied, nor did the current leadership at the paper offer any comment.

Milliken?s perspective

The first thing Milliken wants people to know is he did in fact make it clear the quotes in question came from elsewhere.

?I have been a sports editor/writer in the Southern Vermont/Southwestern New Hampshire areas since 2005, and had written a ?round up? article about a high school basketball game in Townshend, Vermont? a game in which I did not attend personally,? he said. ?In the article I talked about the game and gave statistics, and also included a couple coaches? quotes that I saw in Carroll?s article.?

?However,? he continued, ?after the quotes I stated ?told reporters after the game? indicating that they were not quotes given to me personally. I also included in the article, a couple ?stock photos? that were clearly labeled as images that were not taken at this particular game. Therefore, why would I include photos that were clearly not from that game, if I was trying to give the impression that I was there? When I wrote that article, I can honestly tell you that I was not thinking ?how can I make it look like I was at that game?? That thought never entered my mind.?

Milliken says Carroll called him up after article was published, and warned him that he was planning to write a column about what he saw as plagiarism.

?He called me a liar and attempted to intimidate and get me to admit that I was ?intentionally trying to give the impression that I was at that game,? and that was not the case and that is not what I apologized for,? Milliken said. ?I apologized to him for the misunderstanding and that he took my article the wrong way, but I also repeatedly told him that it was not my intention to give the impression that I was at the game, hence, my submitting of photos with the article that were not even from said game.?

The conversation was heated, and Milliken says he apologized repeatedly. But he declined to admit he?d tried to pretend he was at the game, or that he plagiarized. That apparently led Carroll to write his column.

?Several times over, I apologized for the misunderstanding ? he told me that he didn?t think my apology was sincere enough, so [Carroll said] ?it looks like I am going to have to write this article?? and hung up on me,? Milliken said. ?He even pettily accused me of putting in for the mileage as if I had gone to the game.?

Milliken says the fact that he noted that the quotes came from elsewhere meant the accusations were unjustified and inaccurate.

However, that wasn?t the only accusation Carroll made about Milliken?s work.

?Milliken?s been taking stuff out of other papers and passing it off as his own for years,? wrote Carroll, citing the fact that other unnamed local journalists had expressed that sentiment to him.

?I was really upset when Carroll accused me of this, so I approached a couple local sports writers ? who I had been working alongside for years and asked them directly if they thought I had been doing this,? Milliken told me. ?To my dismay, a couple of these gentlemen, indeed, said they thought I was guilty of this.?

Milliken said he had no idea people had concerns about his reporting.

?I would see these reporters every week at local games and have friendly conversations with them and yet no one, ever once, said to me that they thought I was stealing their information. Not Once!,? Milliken said.

He?s now aware of the concerns and regrets that it was an issue. Carroll?s column helped raise awareness, but for Milliken it also painted him as a repeat plagiarist ? an accusation he rejects.

Milliken hopes that by speaking publicly he?ll be able to win back some writing contracts, and his reputation.

?People around town still walk up to me and ask why I am not covering local sports anymore, and that they miss my sports writing and photography about their kids, grand children, friends,? he said.

Milliken is bothered by the fact that Carroll moved on from the Eagle Times, leaving him to deal with the aftermath.

?In closing, what makes this all even tougher for me to swallow is the fact that both Carroll, and the general manager who let that article run on the front page, are not even at the Eagle Times publication anymore,? he said. ?So here I am, still a member of this community and wanting to do my writing and to positively promote the good things around me, and I can?t because none of these publications will currently accept my work. Whereas Mr. Carroll is nowhere to be found.?

Protect Before You Connect! Simple Precautions To Avoid Online ...

by Mark Weinstein, CEO and founder of Sgrouples.com

The Internet is an amazing, fantastic, vibrant place. But there are also evil people out there who steal identities, hack credit card accounts, track personal information, violate privacy, insert malicious programs that can exploit your company or home network, destroy your hard drives and raid your social network.

It?s critical to take the right precautions in these changing times to protect your personal data and systems from attack.

Here are some of the most important ways to protect yourself:

1. Protect Your Wi-Fi Network.

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can track every action you make through your home?s Internet connection. This is typically used to track illegal activity, which is a good thing.

The bad news is that most home wireless networks are easily cracked, meaning someone next door or in a car outside your house can use your network for illegal activity, leaving the blame on you. Even worse, it is possible for someone on your wireless network to access other devices connected to the network, which is a serious security breach.

For this reason, it?s important to learn to secure your own wireless network: Open up your router settings page, create a unique password and network SSID name, enable network encryption, filter MAC addresses, reduce the range of your wireless signal, use a secure wireless network and monitor for unauthorized users.

2. Get Good Antivirus Software.

The next step is to safeguard your computer against virus and malware attacks that can target your personal information and erase your saved data. Some more innocuous malware programs simply track your behavior and bombard you with ads and pop-ups and slow your computer down.

Having a good antivirus program in place can save you a lot of headache by catching threats early. To find the best fit for your home or business, do a search using the keywords ?best paid antivirus software? and ?best free antivirus software.?

One final note: Even the best antivirus can?t save you 100 percent of the time. Viruses and malware come from the ?shady neighborhoods? of the Web ? gambling, pop culture, pharmaceutical and adult sites in particular. Be aware of what you?re clicking on; don?t download or open something unless you know what you?re getting into. A little precaution goes a long way.

3. Protect Your Passwords.

These days we have more passwords to remember than ever: Facebook, Twitter, online banking, eBay, not to mention multiple email accounts! Make sure your passwords are different for each account.

At the very least, create alternative passwords for your critical accounts (i.e., your bank account and email). Keep your passwords offline on your hard drive, or, if you want to be even more secure, keep them on a physical notepad you keep near your desk.

Do a search on the following: ?creating the best security passwords.? Know what makes a bad password (something easily discovered), get good at creating effective passwords, safeguard your passwords, change them frequently and create an emergency plan. What happens if you or your network administrator dies or is in an accident?

4. Stop Tracking Cookies.

Like it or not, Facebook and other social media are now able to track and record your exact interests. It?s no coincidence. Facebook is tracking all your likes and hobbies, even the words you write, and then uses that data to target advertising to match those interests. It?s not that ads are necessarily a bad thing ? it?s the way websites spy on your behavior to sell those ads that is troubling and disconcerting.

A simple, helpful solution is to download the ??Do Not Track? extension for your browser, which tells websites not to collect information about you. However, Do Not Track is simply a request for sites to not track you and has varying degrees of effectiveness. For even more control over who can access your information, Abine?s Do Not Track+ and the Ghostery plugin can both stop invisible ad networks from spying on you. HTTPS Everywhere is also a great tool for privatizing your browsing through basic https encryption.

5. Practice Safe Sharing.

The best way to be absolutely sure that information you post online stays secure is to not post it in the first place. It?s all too easy to accidentally share confidential information publicly or to put up too many personal details without realizing who has access to that information.

But, to be realistic, many of us are not going to stop sharing online. That?s why, instead of abstinence, it is important to learn and practice safe sharing. One way to do that is to review the privacy settings on every social media site you participate in and adjust the setting to maximize your protection against unwanted intrusion.

To find out more for each particular social media site, you can also do a search on the following phrases:

Facebook privacy

Google+ privacy

Twitter privacy

6. Don?t Daisy Chain Your Social Media Accounts.

One of the reasons hackers are able to wreak havoc on people so easily is that all their social profiles are connected to one another. This means that if one profile is compromised, the others are likely to be as well.

While connecting to your accounts is easier if all you need to do is log in once to get access to all your social networks, it?s much less secure than if you have separate passwords for each one.

Determine how often you?re likely to use certain Web apps, and ask yourself if you really need to connect yet another third-party app to your Facebook page. If you don?t really need it, cut the link.

Keep in mind, the more apps you have connected to your accounts, the more potential weak points there are in your security.

7. Set Up 2-factor Authentication.

This amazing technological breakthrough requires both a password and a device to access your accounts. So even if someone does hack your vital account passwords, they still can?t access your critical personal or financial accounts without your phone or secure backup device. For more information, do a search on the phrase using 2-factor authentication.

Sandy's silver lining: Skiing in North Carolina starts early

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Reuters) - Some North Carolina residents donned ski gear instead of Halloween costumes on Wednesday after Hurricane Sandy dumped several inches of snow on western parts of the state and allowed a few resorts to kick off the season early.

Sandy's low-pressure systems pushed cold air down from Canada to bring the winter-like conditions to North Carolina's mountains, National Weather Service meteorologist Doug Outlaw said. Some areas reported getting up to 3 feet of snow.

"This is incredibly unusual," Outlaw said. "It's just unheard of to have an October snowfall like this."

According to the National Weather Service, the location that received the most snow from Sandy was Gatlinburg, Tennessee, which got 34 inches. Clayton, West Virginia, was covered by 33 inches of snow and 29 inches fell on Redhouse, Maryland, the weather service said.

In the Northeast, the historic storm crippled transportation, knocked out power for millions and killed at least 64 people with a massive storm surge that caused epic flooding.

"We're very cognizant of how much damage it's created, but on our end, it's been great to be able to open this early and get folks excited about the season," said Tammy Brown, spokeswoman for the Cataloochee Ski Area in the Great Smoky Mountains in western North Carolina.

The Cataloochee Ski Area welcomed skiers on Wednesday after getting about 8 inches of snow in the storm, Brown said. It is only the second October opening in 52 seasons, she said. About 200 skiers hit the slopes by mid-morning, she said.

The Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, also in western North Carolina, marked its first October opening on Wednesday, beating the record for its earliest start by about a week.

Skiers and snowboarders can expect a 6- to 30-inch base of natural and manmade snow on the mountain, resort spokeswoman Kim Jochl said.

"It's literally a winter wonderland," she said. "Everything's white."

But the weather service's Outlaw said skies were starting to clear and temperatures warming, so the snow may not last long.

The forecast didn't diminish Brown's enthusiasm.

"This early, it's always watch and wait," she said. "If we're able to make snow, we're going to stay open as long as we can."

English town to burn Lance Armstrong in effigy

LONDON (AP) ? His career is in ruins and now an effigy of Lance Armstrong is about to go up in smoke.

The disgraced American cyclist has been chosen as the latest celebrity to be burned in effigy during an English town's nationally famous Bonfire Night celebrations.

Edenbridge in southeast England has built a 30-foot (9-meter) model of Armstrong, who was stripped recently of his seven Tour de France titles for doping offenses.

The effigy, to be burnt Saturday, sports a sign saying "For sale, racing bike, no longer required."

Towns across Britain light bonfires and set off fireworks on Nov. 5 to commemorate Guy Fawkes' failed plot in 1605 to blow up Parliament.

The bonfires are traditionally topped with an effigy of Fawkes but have been decorated with contemporary figures over recent years.

Previous Edenbridge effigies include comedian Russell Brand and soccer star Wayne Rooney.

cell phone jammer of low price is very popular.
This study investigated the Lanzhou University and SMS mobile phone text messages using psychological and behavioral factors related to the hope of cell phone text messages as well as psychological reasons for the phenomenon of heat to do a preliminary study. Such things as cell phone text messages are only hot new thing in recent years, academic research on it is rare, many papers have around SMS technology and innovation to expand the discussion of the theory. Therefore, we extracted only from the fields with the SMS-related research and theory, such as communication theory, drawing on the results of other research areas - such as network usage and cell phone - as the basis for this study. In such circumstances, will inevitably lead to the most critical of this study is to study the inadequacies of theoretical foundation is not solid, the impact of selected variables that can be limited, this study is more akin to an exploratory study. The new trend of cell phone and cell phone jammer industry is energy-saving.Extraversion of one pair of SMS understanding of the technical characteristics of a number of SMS sent; extraversion of a number of SMS sent; pleasant of one pair of SMS understanding of the technical characteristics of a number of SMS sent; open one pair of SMS technology features understanding of a number of SMS sent. Among them, the technical features of SMS understanding and extraversion directly affect SMS adoption, and family sources, communication anxiety, pleasant, open, and so indirectly by influencing the technical features of mobile phone text messages to influence the understanding of the number of SMS sent. According to Figure 1 and the previous regression analysis, multiple regression model to establish the following: The first multiple regression: the school standard variable costs account for the mobile phone SMS cost ratio for the predictor variables in the sense of personality, social support and the need to make friends. The second multiple regression: the school variables are marked on the awareness of the need to make friends, forecasting variable is a subjective sense of responsibility and support. Normally, cell phone jammer only interferes with the signal between base station and cell phone.
Based on the above regression analysis selected the variables into the regression equation dimensions, the path analysis, the results shown in Figure 4. Thus, the impact of mobile phone text messages cost a significant proportion of the path are: a sense of responsibility - SMS cost ratio: a sense of responsibility an awareness of the need an entertainment SMS cost ratio; entertainment needs an understanding of the proportion of SMS costs. Studies have shown that with the phone calls and lower cost, college students have cell phones, sending text messages has become a common phenomenon.

Decline in incidence of heart attacks appears associated with smoke-free workplace laws

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? A decline in the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI, heart attack) in one Minnesota county appears to be associated with the implementation of smoke-free workplace laws, according to a report published Online First by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) in nonsmokers, and research suggests that the cardiovascular effects of SHS are nearly as large as those with active smoking, according to the study background. Elimination of smoking in public places, such as by smoke-free laws and policies, has the potential for reducing smoking and perhaps cardiovascular events.

Richard D. Hurt, M.D., and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., evaluated the incidence of MI and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in Olmsted County, Minn., during the 18-month period before and after implementation of smoke-free ordinances. In 2002, a smoke-free restaurant ordinance was implemented and, in 2007, all workplaces, including bars, became smoke free.

"We report a substantial decline in the incidence of MI from 18 months before the smoke-free restaurant law was implemented to 18 months after the comprehensive smoke-free workplace law was implemented five years later," the authors comment.

When comparing the 18 months before implementation of the smoke-free restaurant ordinance with the 18 months after implementation of the smoke-free workplace law, the incidence of MI declined by 33 percent from about 150.8 to 100.7 per 100,000 population, and the incidence of SCD declined by 17 percent from 109.1 to 92 per 100,000 population.

"All people should avoid SHS exposure as much as possible, and those with CHD should have no exposure to SHS," the authors conclude.

Editor's Note: This study was supported in part by a grant from ClearWay Minnesota, a grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute/National Institutes of Health and a grant from the National Institute on Aging/National Institutes of Health. Commentary: Extending the Health Benefits of Clean Indoor Air Policies

In an invited commentary, Sara Kalkhoran, M.D., and Pamela M. Ling, M.D., M.P.H., of the University of California, San Francisco, write: "The results of the study by Hurt et al highlight some of the potential benefits of 100 percent smoke-free policies in workplaces, restaurants and bars: significantly decreased incidence of myocardial infarction and a trend toward decreased sudden cardiac death."

"Moving forward, we should prioritize the enforcement of smoke-free policies, eliminating loopholes in existing policies as well as encouraging expansion of smoke-free policies to include multiunit housing, motor vehicles, casinos and outdoor locations," they continue.

"Exposure to SHS should not be a condition of employment, and all workers, including those of lower income and those in the service and hospitality industries, should have equal protection from SHS exposure," they conclude.

Hands-On With Samsung?s ATIV S: A Windows Phone 8 Whopper That?s Got Galaxy SIII-Style

Photo 29-10-2012 18 47 00The Samsung ATIV S is a whopper of a Windows Phone. Indeed it looks like Samsung has repurposed the Samsung GSIII's generous form to accomodate Microsoft's latest WP8 OS. Mass extinction study provides lessons for modern world

Monday, October 29, 2012

The Cretaceous Period of Earth history ended with a mass extinction that wiped out numerous species, most famously the dinosaurs. A new study now finds that the structure of North American ecosystems made the extinction worse than it might have been. Researchers at the University of Chicago, the California Academy of Sciences and the Field Museum of Natural History will publish their findings Oct. 29 online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The mountain-sized asteroid that left the now-buried Chicxulub impact crater on the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is almost certainly the ultimate cause of the end-Cretaceous mass extinction, which occurred 65 million years ago. Nevertheless, "Our study suggests that the severity of the mass extinction in North America was greater because of the ecological structure of communities at the time," noted lead author Jonathan Mitchell, a Ph.D. student of UChicago's Committee on Evolutionary Biology.

Mitchell and his co-authors, Peter Roopnarine of the California Academy of Sciences and Kenneth Angielczyk of the Field Museum, reconstructed terrestrial food webs for 17 Cretaceous ecological communities. Seven of these food webs existed within two million years of the Chicxulub impact and 10 came from the preceding 13 million years.

The findings are based on a computer model showing how disturbances spread through the food web. Roopnarine developed the simulation to predict how many animal species would become extinct from a plant die-off, a likely consequence of the impact.

"Our analyses show that more species became extinct for a given plant die-off in the youngest communities," Mitchell said. "We can trace this difference in response to changes in a number of key ecological groups such as plant-eating dinosaurs like Triceratops and small mammals."

The results of Mitchell and his colleagues paint a picture of late Cretaceous North America in which pre-extinction changes to food webs ? likely driven by a combination of environmental and biological factors ? results in communities that were more fragile when faced with large disturbances.

"Besides shedding light on this ancient extinction, our findings imply that seemingly innocuous changes to ecosystems caused by humans might reduce the ecosystems' abilities to withstand unexpected disturbances," Roopnarine said.

The team's computer model describes all plausible diets for the animals under study. In one run, Tyrannosaurus might eat only Triceratops, while in another it eats only duck-billed dinosaurs, and in a third it might eat a more varied diet. This stems from the uncertainty regarding exactly what Cretaceous animals ate, but this uncertainty actually worked to the study's benefit.

"Using modern food webs as guides, what we have discovered is that this uncertainty is far less important to understanding ecosystem functioning than is our general knowledge of the diets and the number of different species that would have had a particular diet," Angielczyk said.

Data derived from modern food webs helped the simulations account for such phenomena as how specialized animals tend to be, or how body size relates to population size and thus their probability of extinction.

The researchers also selected for their study a large number of specific food webs from all the specific webs possible in their general framework and evaluated how this sample of webs respond to a perturbation, such as the death of plants. They used the same relationships and assumptions to create food webs across all of the different sites, which means the differences between sites just stem from differences in the data rather than from the simulation itself. This makes the simulation a fundamentally comparative method, Roopnarine noted.

"We aren't trying to say that a given ecosystem was fragile, but instead that a given ecosystem was more or less fragile than another," he said.

The computer models showed that if the asteroid hit during the 13 million years preceding the latest Cretaceous communities, there almost certainly would still have been a mass extinction, but one that likely would have been less severe in North America.

Most likely a combination of changing climate and other environmental factors caused some types of animals to become more or less diverse in the Cretaceous, the researchers concluded. In their paper they suggest that the drying up of a shallow sea that covered part of North America may have been one of the main factors leading to the observed changes in diversity.

The study provides no evidence that the latest Cretaceous communities were on the verge of collapse before the asteroid hit. "The ecosystems collapsed because of the asteroid impact, and nothing in our study suggests that they would not have otherwise continued on successfully," Mitchell said. "Unusual circumstances, such as the after-effects of the asteroid impact, were needed for the vulnerability of the communities to become important."

The study has implications for modern conservation efforts, Angielczyk observed.

"Our study shows that the robustness or fragility of an ecosystem under duress depends very much on both the number of species present, as well as the types of species," he said, referring to their ecological function. The study also shows that more is not necessarily better, because simply having many species does not insure against ecosystem collapse.

"What you have is also important," Angelczyk said. "It is therefore critical that conservation efforts pay attention to ecosystem functioning and the roles of species in their communities as we continue to degrade our modern ecosystems."

Eat Healthy?Without Going Broke

By Violet Smith

Eating healthy, delicious meals is more expensive than eating junk (or eating the same boring thing every single day), right?

Not necessarily!

Did you know that, with a little organization and creativity, you can save money and still eat healthy, tasty, high-quality foods?

Step 1.?Plan your meals. Set aside regular blocks of time for planning meal and making your grocery list. Try looking for recipes on the Internet.

Step 2.?Shop smart. Consider the time of day, day of week, and even week in the month that you shop. Generally, the grocery is the least busy early in the morning, in the middle of the week, and on any day but the first day or two of the month (when many people get paid).

Food Choices That Will Save You Money

Here are some healthy foods to add to your grocery list

? Beans.?Can be used to make nutritious, hearty soups, and can be a main course with the addition of fresh vegetables or rice.

? Brown Rice.?Great addition to leftover meat and veggies. Although brown rice is slightly more expensive than white, the nutritional payoff is well worth it. Another inexpensive, easy-to-fix grain, millet, is best when bought fresh. Simply rinse and toast before using it in recipes.

? Whole-wheat Pasta.?Quick and easy to prepare, and can be paired with veggies, meat, or a fresh salad.?Get creative by adding different vegetables, spices and herbs.

? Fresh vegetables and fruit.?These are essentials that should always be on your list. Buy when they?re in season, to ensure optimal taste and nutrition. You can also rely on frozen varieties. Veggies make great stir-fries, while fruit is good for a quick nutritious snack.

? Meat and fish.?Try the newer tuna and salmon pouches, and shop for inexpensive cuts of meat that work well in stews and casseroles.

? Condiments.?These add flavor and interest to your dishes. Keep a selection of dried herbs, spices, curry powder, marinades, vinegars, tomato and soy sauces, along with stock cubes, in your cupboard. Try experimenting with the new flavors as well.

Money-Saving Cooking Tips

? When cooking, make extra portions. Then, either freeze them, or use them later in the week for lunches or quick suppers.

? Save your vegetable trimmings to make your own vegetable stock. Not only do you save money, but vegetable stock also makes a nutritious base for casseroles, soups, and Crockpot cooking.

? Buying in bulk is almost always cheaper; you can freeze perishable items (such as meat, milk, and even bread) in smaller portions to use as needed. It?s always a good idea to buy non-perishable items in bulk (canned foods, dried beans and grains, etc.).

? Use less expensive cuts of meat for casseroles that you slow cook; add extra vegetables and beans to make the meal go further.

? Capitalize on one-pot dishes, which generally save prep time, money, and dishwashing, and often make great leftovers.

? Limit your dining out, especially when it comes to fast food, since you?ll find yourself spending unnecessarily on items that are high in fat, salt, and calories, which short-change you in the nutrition department.

Don?t Forget Your Daily Healthy Eating Goals:

? Limit your intake of junk food
? Drink lots of water (at least 8?cups a day)
? Limit salty and sugary foods
? Avoid eating foods high in saturated fats

Though it takes a little planning, creativity, and work, the rewards of healthy, smart shopping can be a happier body?and wallet.

United wins at Chelsea in EPL after 10-year wait

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:52 p.m. ET Oct. 28, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Substitute Javier Hernandez ended Manchester United's 10-year wait for a Premier League victory at Chelsea on Sunday, striking late to secure a 3-2 win after the hosts had two players sent off.

The Mexico striker scored in the 75th minute to inflict the league leaders' first loss of the season and put United just a point behind Chelsea.

"It was a really difficult game as they commanded at the end of the first half, we were very lucky we scored the last goal," Hernandez said. "For some people it will be very controversial, for others it won't. For us, we won the three points and it was very difficult."

United threw away a two-goal lead established inside 12 minutes. Robin van Persie saw his shot turned in by Chelsea defender David Luiz before getting on the scoresheet himself.

Chelsea fought back as Juan Mata curled in a free kick just before half time and Ramires headed in an equalizer eight minutes after the break.

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic was sent off in the 63rd for bringing down Ashley Young, and striker Fernando Torres received a second booking for diving.

"It's a shame a game like this has to be decided in this manner by officials," Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo said. "Surely when he watches the images he (the referee) will realize he made a big mistake."

Chelsea had not lost at Stamford Bridge in a league match to United since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, and he watched in frustration as his side's comeback counted for nothing.

"It's been 10 years since we have won down here," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We had a good record until Jose (Mourinho) came along (in 2004) and spoiled the party."

Chelsea will have a chance for revenge on Wednesday when the teams meet again in the League Cup here.

Early on, Chelsea appeared to be missing captain John Terry, who was serving the second game of his four-match ban for racially abusing an opponent.

After just four minutes, United ripped through Chelsea's defense down the right with Young laying the ball off to Wayne Rooney, who squared to Van Persie in the penalty area.

The Netherlands striker's shot came off the post but it bounced off Luiz into the net.

Chelsea's brittle back line was sliced through again in the 12th when Rafael da Silva was given too much space to storm down the right flank unchallenged.

The defender slipped the ball through to Antonio Valencia, who crossed to the unmarked Van Persie to sweep in his ninth United goal since arriving in August.

United was playing with confidence, pinging the ball across the turf with ease and precession.

Chelsea took time to assert itself on the visitors, but kept United goalkeeper David de Gea busy for the rest of the half, blocking a free kick of Luiz with his outstretched right foot and then thwarting Gary Cahill's header.

But the pressure paid off for Chelsea a minute before the break, with Mata superbly curling the free kick inside the post after Eden Hazard was brought down by Rooney.

The momentum was with Chelsea - and continued after the break as United's defense was the one to be exposed.

The equalizer came eight minutes into the second half as United failed to close down Chelsea's fluid attacking play.

Mata took the ball to the byline and found space to whip in a cross that Torres headed across to Oscar. The Brazilian then chipped across to Ramires, who rose above Tom Cleverley to head past De Gea.

As the hosts continued to pressure the United defense, their plan was ripped apart by being reduced to 10 men in the 63rd when Ivanovic brought down Young, halting his advance to goal.

Six minutes later, referee Mark Clattenburg pulled out the red card again to further infuriate Chelsea.

Having been booked at the end of the first half for a foul on Cleverley, Torres received a second yellow card after being adjudged to have gone down too easily under Evans' challenge.

"I made a bit of contact but I don't feel it was enough to bring him down," Evans said. "I think he probably realized he wasn't getting the ball and went down."

Hernandez restored United's lead in the 75th, 10 minutes after replacing Cleverley.

Van Persie's initial shot appeared to be creeping into the bottom right of the net after Cech got a touch to it but the goalkeeper hacked the ball away.

It fell to Rafael, whose shot was turned into the net by Hernandez, although the striker later accepted he might have been offside.

Just after Hernandez's winner, a steward in front of Chelsea fans fell to the ground and was still receiving treatment as the match ended.

"He slipped and fell and may have hurt his knee," Chelsea spokesman Steve Atkins said, refuting initial suggestions that the steward was hit by an object.

HPV risk for protected anal with CSW - STDs - MedHelp

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your question.

Essentially, you are asking a) the likelihood your commerical partner had anal HPV; b) if she did, the chance you might catch it after a single exposure; and c) the further likelihood given that the exposure was condom-protected.

As you might imagine, there are absolutely no available data on which to base an answer.??I would guess that the chance you were infected was low, since you used a condom.??But I really can't say more.

However, you definitely should NOT "be worried about future relationships and harming someone else because of this".??As a sexually active person, assuming you have had several different sex partners in your life, you can assume you have been infected with HPV -- and for all you know, may still be carrying a genital HPV infection.??Almost everyone is infected, and your risk is no higher because of this event than it was before.??In any case, it is almost never possible to trace a newly discovered HPV infection to any particular partner or exposure.??That applies both to you, in the event you ever diagnosed with HPV, or in any sex partners you may have in the future.

These are the reasons that we generally advise sexually active people to disregard HPV. You can't avoid being infected (apart from vaccination to protect against 4 of the most troublesome HPV types), and can do nothing terribly effective to reduce the risk of transmitting HPV to partners.

Your motive are good:??you don't want to risk your health or that of future partners.??But trust me on this:??it is unlikely you have significantly elevated that risk because of this particular exposure.

I hope this has helped.??Best wishes--??HHH, MD

Is it too early to start applying for Summer 2013 Internships ...

Just a little background about me first:
- Expected Graduation: 2014 with a B.Math in Actuarial Science.
- GPA is not impressive (
- Passed P in Sept 2012, Sitting for FM in Feb 2013, MFE July 2013 (if pass FM)
- No actuarial experience
- One summer position (2010) in a small business (no real responsibilities)

1) Is it too early (or even late) to start applying for Summer 2013 Internships?

2) Should I start applying now (with only P) or in Feb when I'll (hopefully) have P and FM under my belt? If I apply now, can I reapply in Feb if I pass FM?

3) I would be looking in the Toronto region. I don't mind relocating, what chances do I have across Canada/in the U.S. compared to Toronto?

4) Most firms don't have specific listings for internships. Should I just find e-mails of managers and e-mail them my cover letter/resume?

5) How do the number of actuarial internships differ from Summer as opposed to Fall or Winter? Should I put all my effort into Summer or is there hope to find one for Fall/Winter as well?

6) Should I use my university or gmail e-mail address?

Thank you for your time AO.

Roku update adds cross-provider search over Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, Vudu and Crackle

Roku update adds crossprovider search across Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, Vudu and Crackle

We've seen web portals that let you search for TV and movies on the internet across different services, but a new update for Roku is bringing that capability directly to its set-top boxes. Whether you're searching by movie, TV show, actor or director it will sniff out related content across some of the higher profile services it offers, including Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle, Vudu and HBO Go. The new Roku Search function is front and center (once your second gen HD or higher player has been updated to the latest version) and in our tests worked quickly, pulling up content wherever it was available and mentioning if it was available in HD. The only downside is navigating the onscreen keyboard via remote, although you can always sub in your mobile device thanks to those recently upgraded remote apps for iOS and Android. All in all Roku says it can reach its tendrils across around 130,000 titles and almost 100,000 actors and directors. Check after the break for a couple of screenshots and a quick demo video, hit the official blog for more info or force an update on your hockey puck to check it out yourself.

Easy Ways To Promote Your Business Online - Bordeaux Marketing ...

A strong web presence can be a very valuable strategy for any business, and effective Online marketing will spread the word about your product or service. It may seem easy at first, but you have to become educated on the topic of internet promotion in order to succeed at it. This article is provided to give you some basic tips and advice, so when you jump into the world of Internet promotion, you?ll know what to expect.

Use a signature on every email you send out, whether it is business related or not. Since your signature is essentially your cyber business card, you need to hand it out at every opportunity. By allowing the recipients of your e-mails to see how your business really is, you are more likely to gain increased traffic and profits.

Read the various studies done on the psychology of Internet promotion and web design. Colors and themes can have a drastic impact on the way readers perceive your site, regardless of content. You can apply this information in order to increase your profits.

Promote your product with positive motivation. Inform potential customers of what the benefits could be if they purchase from you. Encourage your readers to be successful, and they will believe it too.

When designing your website use Flash and AJAX, sparingly. Even though it looks nice, it does not increase your search engine rankings. Flash is unnecessary for SEO purposes, and a successful Internet site can engage customers without it.

One way to use Affiliate marketing is to link it with the charity of your choice. Find a charity that interests your audience and give a portion of your profits to it. You can even use this charity to give yourself free advertisement. You can partner with more than a singular charity to give your costumer base a chance to choose which to support.

To succeed with Web marketing, you must have a quality website. Always spot test your site to eliminate things like bad links and glitches that make your business look incompetent. If visitors have a hard time looking through your site, they will probably avoid purchasing anything from you.

Design your emails so that they create a sense of urgency to act in your customers. These actions could include something as simple as visiting a website, or it could be buying one of your products or services. Tracking the actions your customer takes can help you see how successful your email marketing efforts were.

It is important to have evidence that supports any claims you make in your advertisements. A lot of people simply don?t believe what they read. Including research study results, testimonials, references or guarantees can enhance your credibility and increase the likelihood that you make a sale. Claims offered on their own, lacking any sort of support, can actually hurt your business instead of help it.

As you can see, website marketing is one of the best ways to get your website out there for everyone to see. You really need to figure out what you are supposed to do in order to be a successful Internet marketer. The ideas presented in this article should help you get the most from your Online marketing efforts.

Is It Safe to Take a Jordan Holiday? | BeCleanLiveGreen

Posted by Travel-and-Leisure:Destination-Tips Articles from EzineArticles.com on October 29, 2012

Recently Jordan has surfaced in the news with alarmist reports of a new terrorist al-Qaida cell that were planning a bomb and mortar attack on western diplomats. News such as this often puts travellers off Jordan holidays but the arrest of these men is in fact a positive sign. Jordan is the safest country in the Middle East, apart from two or three bombings in recent years and some regular, but usually peaceful protests on Fridays, there is only a minor threat to foreign nationals......

So, I Got A Tattoo For My Birthday | The Yolanda Adams Morning ...

It?s true. For my 38th birthday, I got the greenlight to get a tattoo.

I?ve always wanted one.? My family knew I wanted one, but they never really said it would be okay with them. But this year?my daughter really championed the idea. She thought it was finally time.? As it turns out, this was the green light I was waiting for.

Step 1. What to get.

When I first told my friends & family about my tattoo, I would get the same response, ?What comic book character is it going to be??. Am I really?THAT transparent? Do I wear my comic-loving heart on my sleeve? Yes, yes I do.

I went back & forth for many moons, before I decided on the Iron Fist logo.

Iron Fist is a martial arts hero, that represents and stands up for the common folk.

He?s a rich man, donates to charity regularly, and is best friends with Luke Cage.

You can read more about Iron Fist here.

Step 2: Find A Good Tattoo Parlor/Artist

I started looking for places that were somewhat convenient to my house. I made a mental note of each one.? Then, I started asking around. One name that kept popping up was Mark Anthony. I found out he likes comics, just like me. I went to his website, and he?s a true artist. I scheduled a meeting with him and we got to know each other. I was genuinely interested in his opinions on comics, movies, and tattoo art. Long story short, I found my artist and made an appointment at Studio 8 in Houston. Very clean and very professional.

Step 3: Let?s Do This!!

Two weeks later, I went in for my appointment. I admit, I had second thoughts?but I wanted this, and everyone knew I wanted it. I sucked it up and pulled up my sleeve.

Once Mark resized & printed out the image, he made a template. This is kind of like a temporary tattoo that kids play with.

He wets the shoulder, places the template where it needs to go, and we see if it needs to be centered, resized, or reconsidered.

Looks good so far!

Now, it?s time to make it permanent.

Here, you can see the outline that he begins with.

Once it?s outlined, he shades in the dragon.

This process didn?t take long at all. Mark even put a movie on for me while he was working.

And a short time later?

I ended up with?

THIS!!

I love it!

I?d like to add a green glowing/flame effect to it.

Mark had a great idea and did a draft for me (in marker, on my shoulder).

So, I?m going to walk around and ponder what I want for a while.

Now, what you may have noticed is that Iron Fist has this logo on his chest. I like him, but I don?t like him that much.

One thing I wasn?t expecting, was the lack of pain. I always thought getting a tattoo would hurt. It didn?t. Granted, I got my a tattoo on a real?meaty part of my arm. I?m sure there are some extra sensitive parts, that could hurt, but mine didn?t.

Also, my experience was very pleasant. I was surrounded by good folks, that knew their craft.

I?m so happy.

-Jay

Congressman talks issues and philosophy at chamber breakfast ...

PLATTSBURGH ? Congressman Bill Owens says politicians need to change their way of thinking if more positive results are to occur in government.

?If I am re-elected we have to begin the process of talking about the facts ? and not ideology,? Owens (D-Plattsburgh) told a crowd at the North Country Chamber of Commerce breakfast at the Holiday Inn in Plattsburgh on?Friday.

?When you talk about the facts, sometimes you find out you are wrong ... but you have to have the intellectual capacity to (accept) that... That?s not something we do well, and that is not something the public accepts very well.?

Owens, a Democrat from Plattsburgh, is seeking re-election in the 21st District, which covers 12 counties from Lake Ontario in the west to Lake Champlain in the east.

He is challenged by Republican Matt Doheny, an investor from Watertown who is also on the Conservative and Independence party lines. Owens is also on the Working Families Party ticket.

Donald Hassig of St. Lawrence County is also running as the Green Party candidate, but he lags far behind in any polls.

BIPARTISANSHIP

Owens spent a portion of his breakfast talk Friday speaking about the need to work in a bipartisan fashion in order to make improvements in government. He noted that he votes about 35 percent of the time with Republicans, and that he and Republican Chris Gibson of New York?s 19th District and Vermont?s Democratic Congressman Peter Welch, voted together most of the time on the House Agriculture Committee this year.

?The message was clear that we voted for our constituents and not the party, and that is something I hope to do more of,? Owens said.

In a separate interview, Doheny said Owens talks a good game but always sides with his party when it matters.

?I can tell you from my time in the private sector that I never closed a deal where one side got everything they wanted,? he told the Press-Republican.

?I plan to work with anyone, regardless of party, who advocates for solutions that will help improve our economy and get people back to work in the North Country. If Sen. (Charles) Schumer or Gov. (Andrew) Cuomo (both Democrats) comes up with a good idea, I?ll help them make it a reality.?

SUPPORTS FARMING

Owens also told the crowd that he is working to better agreements with Canada to improve border crossings so goods can move across faster without compromising security. He noted that the Canadian impact on the region is about $1.6 billion per year, which is as much as Fort Drum brings in near Watertown in the western part of the district.

He also said he found it interesting that Republican leadership in the House has called for a vote on the Farm Bill after the election instead of before. Owens has been pushing for a vote on the bill for much of this year, saying that without it, farming in the district could seriously be hampered.

?Agriculture is the largest gross domestic product in the 21st District, and we need to make sure farming businesses move forward with stability,? he said.

Doheny has also supported improved border practices and better conditions for farmers.

?EMPTY RHETORIC?

When asked what he would do about Medicare, Owens said he would focus on more preventive care and creating fewer hospital re-admissions.

?We also need to allow Medicare to negotiate its own prescription drug prices ? that could mean a savings of about $50 billion per year,? he said.

Doheny said President Barack Obama campaigned four years ago to let Medicare negotiate its own prescription drug deals but has dropped the idea.

?My opponent is recycling a broken promise, when he knows even the Democratic-led Senate won?t allow the idea to the floor. That is not happening ? just more empty rhetoric,? he said.

ECONOMIC GROWTH

While Owens said he is not in favor of raising the minimum wage at this time, he does support a ?trickle up? theory where the middle class can spur economic growth.

?We need to strengthen the middle class and push everybody up. That?s a concept that has been lost,? he said.

Doheny was not buying Owens?s theory, saying wages have fallen 5 percent or more in the district since Owens joined Congress in 2009.

He also said that average wages in the district are $696, more than 13 percent below the national average, and costs for gasoline and other staples have gone up.

?He wants to raise taxes on the job creators, who employ the very middle-class people he claims to want to help,? Doheny said.

?It just doesn?t make sense. We need lower taxes, less regulation, a stronger dollar and more opportunity here in the district. I will be an advocate for all individuals, regardless of income, in Congress.?

HASSIG ARRESTED

Hassig made news this week when he got arrested in Massena for refusing to leave Massena Memorial Hospital, where he was handing out information about breast-cancer carcinogen exposure minimization.

He has been arrested four times during the campaign so far, and the Green Party of New York state has distanced itself from him.

Investors take defensive stance as hurricane Sandy ... - forex brokers

US markets were closed overnight and will remain so on Tuesday in anticipation of hurricane Sandy, which is threatening the highly populated east coast of America, including the global business hub of New York. The significant drop in market participants kept liquidity across currencies light with the US dollar prominently bid across the board, including against the Japanese Yen which continued to weaken ahead of today?s Bank of Japan policy meeting. The latest commitment of traders report shows a significant reversal of long-side positioning in anticipation of today?s meeting, with positions moving from a net long of 10,000 contracts to net short 18,000.

Clearly markets have well and truly baked in the chances of at least 10-Trillion Yen of additional monetary easing, however the BoJ has a history of playing with the minds of investors ahead of such decisions. This suggests the bank may decide to take advantage of the key inflection set in recent weeks and hit the market with a 20-Trillion Yen offensive. Still, it?s worth considering previous efforts to devalue the Yen ? both in monetary easing and directive intervention ? have been less than decisive, with only a short-period of weakness before a broad reversal in the following months. A surprise 20-Trillion Yen increase in QE may set the scene for a short burst of energy through the September highs just above Y80.6, before the USDJPY is once again at the mercy of broader risk trends.

Complicating matters in Japan is their very own version of the ?fiscal cliff,? with politicians in debate about increasing the debt ceiling, which threatens to disrupt the flow of capital required to finance spending initiatives. If the United States is any guide, Japan may be in for a lengthy period of political brinkmanship, with lawmakers willing to carry the debate to the brink of disaster before a consensus is reached. Japans Finance Minister Koriki Jojima has said the government will run out of money by the end of November if the bill to increase the debt ceiling is not passed.

Meanwhile the commodity bloc has started the week on the back foot with the Aussie, Kiwi and CAD easing against the greenback in unison. Hurricane Sandy has prompted investors to take a defensive stance with the US dollar the natural beneficiary, while other major themes such as the monthly payroll data on Friday suggests there?s some sidelining in the lead up. European markets also contributed to headwinds with concerns Greece has still not reached a deal with the troika over budget reform need to secure their next bailout installment.

As widely reported, recent RBA data shows the bank have accumulated over A$800 million in foreign reserves through August and September, in what has been described as a form of ?passive? intervention. In essence, rather than translating accumulated foreign reserves back to home currency, the RBA is sitting on reserves in a passive attempt to take some of the froth off the top. We anticipate this exercise to be limited in duration given the risk of accumulating a mountain of US dollar denominated reserves, which carry little to no yield and watered down to the tune of $40bn per month, courtesy of the Federal Reserve. Nevertheless, recent times have seen a step-up in rhetoric from board members in relation to persistent strength of the local unit, suggesting the high Australian dollar is more than ever on the banks radar. While these concerns may given weight to a case for further policy easing, Stevens and Co are acutely aware of the limitations a small tweak in the cash rate has on the exchange rate, with the yield attached the Australian dollar still at a significant differential to that of other major economies. ?Earlier this month the bank said there is ?scope? for policy to be ?a little more accommodative? in light of headwinds both locally and abroad. While this may indicate another 25bps cut could be on the cards, it hardly suggests the start of a series of cuts needed to change the Aussie?s innate appeal as a risk currency. This assures the Aussie?s ?risk? credentials remain intact. At the time of writing the Australian dollar is buying 103.3 US cents. Scheduled events today include the HIA new home sales data, and investors will also be watching a speech by RBA Deputy Governor Philip Lowe on Tuesday for further clues ahead of the RBA policy decision next week.
