The construction industry is shifting from the British standards to newly harmonised codes developed by the European Union.
Public Works PS John Lonyangapuo said the Eurocodes are expected to address safety in construction work.
?Our industry has to evolve and adopt the standards to keep up with the current technology and industrial best practices,? he said.
Mr Lonyangapuo said implementation of the codes would enhance professionalism and increase research to minimise shoddy work.
?We have witnessed collapsing buildings in Nairobi, Kiambu, Embakasi and leaning towers in Mombasa. We expect that with advent of Eurocodes, similar problems will be addressed,? said Lonyangapuo.
The PS made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by the ministry?s Acting Director Mwenja Wanjau during the opening of a workshop on the introduction of structural Eurocodes in Eldoret, yesterday.
He said as a coordinator in the construction industry, the Ministry of Public Works would ensure safety and security of Kenyans by developing systems with Eurocodes regulations and norms.
Moi University, Free University of Brussels, Delft University of Technology and Kenya Bureau of Standards organised the workshop whose theme was ?Change to Eurocodes for Structural Engineering in Kenya?.
Moi University Vice Chancellor Richard Mibey said many lives have been lost due to collapsing buildings despite civil and structural engineers being trained on a range of standards and codes in the sector. He urged institutions to adapt a curricular that includes use of Eurocodes.
