COULD this be the look of things to come for stores in the Scotmid chain?
Well for some certainly but perhaps not for all.
The Edinburgh-based co-operative chose a store in the capital city to be the first to be converted to a new style that is likely to be repeated in a number of other stores.
The outlet ? in Warrender Park, south of Edinburgh city centre, close to the Meadows, the city?s Royal Hospital for Sick Children and a number of Edinburgh University and Napier University sites ? has been transformed with a new look that Scotmid says marks a ?major modernisation? of the Scotmid brand.
It features a new exterior style which includes green typography on a black background ? the current Scotmid style is predominantly blue.
There?s a new style for the Scotmid logo, the store has increased the space given to chilled and fruit and veg sections, has widened aisles and introduced a Costa Express coffee-to-go facility.
Opening hours have been extended, and the outlet now has a free ATM, a bakery and Paypoint.
In the original store, wines and spirits were in a separate stand-alone section, but the new design has integrated the drinks section.
Scotmid has seen substantial growth in its number of outlets in recent years. It bought the Spar stores of former multiple c-store chain Botterills and has picked up a number of other sites.
Warrender Park ? with many students, academic staff and medical staff living nearby ? was identified as a suitable area for a store style which the society?s head of corporate communications Malcolm Brown said would reflect its long heritage as a food and drink retailer.
Customer feedback had already been very positive, he added.
It was very likely that other sites would suit similar development, he said, but each potential development would be considered individually.
Kimberley Guthrie, Scotmid?s marketing director said the Warrender Park changes had actually been made in close consultation with the store?s customers.
?We have a constant two way dialogue with the customer base and in listening to them we have introduced a number of new initiatives at Warrender Park that could become the template for many of our stores.
?This is part of a new era for Scotmid ? an era that will see us develop stores that create a great new shopping experience and will keep us at the forefront of the convenience market in Scotland.?
