Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy makes use of a special chamber which is known as pressure chamber. This chamber is used to increase the total amount of oxygen present in the blood. The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is primarily defined to as a well established treatment mode in which the patients are wholly enclosed in one pressure chamber to breathe oxygen at a pressure greater than atmosphere.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can help in curing wounds, especially the infected wounds and help to heal more quickly. This kind of therapy is used in order to treat gas gangrene, air or gas embolism, skin grafts, sinus or brain infections, poisoning of carbon monoxide, decompression sickness, radiation injury, bone infections like osteomyelitis that have not been improved with the other treatments, necrotizing the soft tissue infections.
The use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is particularly common in healing wounds that have not been healed with other treatments. Such a therapy can be effectively used to treat foot ulcer in someone with bad blood circulation or with diabetes. The treatments of different chronic conditions can also be repeated for several weeks or over a certain period of time. In fact, treatment session tends to be longer for more acute symptoms like decompression sickness can be a bit longer and not necessarily repeated.
The Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is about breathing 100 percent oxygen under an increased atmospheric pressure. This treatment was first introduced in 1600s. This was when the first even chamber was constructed and run by the British clergyman named Henshaw. It was Henshaw who constructed a structure which was called domicilium. Now this domicilium was put into use to treat various kinds of diseases.
The first ever chamber developed for the HOT treatment was pressurized with air or unpressurized with the use of bellows. The main idea was to treat patients under an increased pressure which was continued with Fontaine who was a French surgeon. This French surgeon built mobile operating, pressurized room in the year 1879. Then in 1928, Dr Orville Cunningham who was a professor of anesthesia started the Steel Ball Hospital. This structure was about six stories high and about 64 feet in diameter. This could effectively reach three atmospheres of pressure. Due to lack of proper scientific proof indicating that such kind of treatment alleviated diseases, the hospital was ultimately closed in the year 1930.
When a patient is given oxygen under pressure, the hemoglobin saturated but the blood can be hyper-oxygenated by means of dissolving oxygen within plasma. A patient can well be administered the systemic oxygen via the two basic chambers- Type A and Type B. Both types are used for the routine wound care, treatment of the dive injuries, and treatment of the patients that are ventilated or are in critical care.
