Google has moved a step closer to launching its eagerly-awaited ultra-high speed internet service with the announcement that a test version of Google Fiber will be made available to a small community in Kansas City from September.
While the upcoming test project will only directly benefit a relative handful of homes, the eyes of the world will still be on the Missouri community due to the company's promise of proving speeds 100 times faster than conventional cable broadband connections.
The new service will allow users to access tens of thousands of hours worth of on-demand programming while also accessing hundreds of live channels, including those owned by the world's biggest broadcasters.
Announcing the news, Google's chief financial officer Patrick Pichette explained that "access is the next frontier that needs to be opened", and that Google has not only the expertise to push internet speeds forward but the know-how to do this profitably, as well.
According to Google, the standard Google Fiber package, which includes 1Gb internet, will be priced at $120 a month, with the company set to rollout the scheme in other cities soon after the Kansas City launch.
