The heat is on where elephants roam. Daytime temperatures in the natural environment of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) average between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius. Elephants do not sweat or pant to cool down and their small surface-to-volume ratio restricts heat loss. Experts have long suspected that elephants may have a heat storage mechanism similar to that used by camels and other desert mammals. Scientists at the Research Institute of Wildlife Ecology (FIWI) at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna have now shown convincingly that Asian elephants respond to high daytime temperatures by significantly lowering their body temperature during the cooler night hours. By doing so they create a kind of thermal reserve that allows them to store heat and so prevent heat stress as temperatures rise during the day. This finding is particularly interesting because it raises the possibility that heat storage is much more widespread among mammals than previously thought.

Heterothermy is an adaptive mechanism by which body temperature fluctuates in response to environmental temperature, decreasing at night when it is cooler and increasing gradually in the daytime. The FIWI researchers have investigated whether elephants make use of heterothermy. To do so, they fed small telemeters to a group of captive elephants in Thailand and a control group at the Munich Zoo Hellabrunn to monitor temperatures in the animals gastrointestinal tract. This telemetry system, which permits the continuous recording of temperature, had previously been developed at the Research Institute of Wildlife Ecology. Statistical analysis of the data confirmed the scientists' expectations: the overall mean body temperature was similar in both the Thai and the German study groups but fluctuations in body temperature were on average twice as large in the Thai animals as in the German individuals. The Thai animals had both a higher daily peak temperature and a lower minimum temperature, which the scientists related to the higher mean ambient temperatures in Thailand. In fact, the body temperature of the Thai elephants dropped at night to well below the normal average. This means that Thai elephants start the day with a much larger thermal reserve than their German counterparts.

Thomas Ruf, an expert in animal physiology and co-author of the study, is excited by the new results. "The phenomenon of heterothermy as a thermoregulatory mechanism was known from desert animals such as camels, antelopes and small desert rodents but it was surprising to find it in non-desert mammals. Our findings raise the intriguing possibility that heterothermy may be far more widespread in mammals than previously assumed". This will certainly be an interesting topic to investigate in the future and the temperature sensors developed in FIWI should provide the scientists with a good handle to tackle it.

Proposed Alaska Mine Faces Fierce Opposition

In Alaska's picturesque Bristol Bay region, developers are looking to build an enormous copper and gold mine. They promise the effort will be carried out in an environmentally responsible way ? and provide area jobs. But fisherman, conservationists and native groups have joined efforts to thwart the mine, fearing it will pollute fish and wildlife. Melissa Block talks about the battle for Bristol Bay with reporter Daysha Eaton of member station KDLG in Dillingham, Alaska.

Copyright ? 2011 National Public Radio?. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

MELISSA BLOCK, host: In Alaska, a proposal to build North America's largest open pit mine is being challenged with a local ballot initiative. The ballot measure targets plans for a gigantic copper and gold mine. Opponents say the mine would ruin the ecology of one of the world's most productive wild salmon fisheries in Bristol Bay. Daysha Eaton, a reporter with member station KDLG in Dillingham, Alaska, has been following the fight over the pebble mine and she joins me now. Daysha, welcome.

DAYSHA EATON: Hi, Melissa.

BLOCK: What is the scale of this proposed mine? How big would it be?

EATON: Well, it's hard to say exactly how big it would be. The mine area, it spans over 150 square miles, but they don't have a mine plan yet. And so, until we see a mine plan, we don't really know how big the mine would be.

BLOCK: And the value of the minerals and the metals that are expected from this site, it's huge.

EATON: It's huge. It's billions. The mine site is said to hold an estimated 80 billion pounds of copper, more than a hundred million ounces of gold, and about five billion pounds of molybdenum.

BLOCK: And the fight over the proposed mine has to do with the ecology around Bristol Bay. Explain why this area is so valued.

EATON: Well, activists who are fighting against the mine are very concerned because they say that the mine site is at the headwaters of Bristol Bay. Now, the headwaters is kind of a political word to a lot of people around here. Nobody really knows what that mean or wants to agree that that's where the mine is. But it is near a lot of the streams that feed into rivers that run into Bristol Bay. And that's salmon spawning ground.

They're still doing environmental studies of the site to find out whether or not salmon are actually spawning nearby the site, and we're waiting on that information now.

BLOCK: And the mine has been a source of controversy for quite a long time now. Who's lined up in opposition to it?

EATON: Well, the mine has brought together a unique group of people who've never really worked together before - commercial fishermen, sport fishermen, Alaska natives groups and corporations, and conservation groups, including Trout Unlimited. They're very active here. There are several conservation groups throughout Alaska and the U.S. who are now jumping on board.

Bob Gillam, he's considered one of the richest men - if not the richest - businessmen in Alaska. He has been behind this SOS Initiative. And it came out in the Alaska Daily News this morning that he was the sole funder of the group that's behind the SOS Initiative.

BLOCK: SOS standing for?

EATON: Save Our Salmon.

BLOCK: And on the other side, who's in support?

EATON: In support of the mine are people who are pro-development. The Pebble Partnership which is behind the mine, of course, is for it. And anybody who really wants development and resource development, in particular, in the sate is behind it.

BLOCK: And where do the native groups line up on this? Would some be saying, look, there are jobs here, we need these jobs?

EATON: Yes, the Alaska native group that are up closest to the mine development, near Lake Iliamna, they're on board with the mining operation for the most part because they're benefitting already from jobs and development in the area. But the groups, the Alaska native groups that are closer to Bristol Bay, the Alaska Native corporations are opposed to the mine and throughout Alaska.

BLOCK: Now, let's talk about the local ballot measure against the mine. It's been hotly contested. Ballots, I gather, are due next week. Does the ballot initiative have teeth, and what happens if it were to pass, and will there be a whole lot more litigation to follow?

EATON: I think you can be sure there'll be more litigation to follow. The initiative doesn't have a lot of teeth. The people will be able to say whether or not they want the mine by how they vote on the initiative, but the courts can go ahead and say that it's not constitutional, if they so choose.

BLOCK: I've been talking with Daysha Eaton of member station KDLG in Dillingham, Alaska, about the proposed Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay.

Daysha, thanks so much.

EATON: Thank you.

Cantaloupe deaths and illnesses expected to rise

Cantaloupe deaths and illnesses: The heads of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said consumers who have cantaloupes produced by Jensen Farms in Colorado should throw them out.

Federal health officials said Wednesday more illnesses and possibly more deaths may be linked to an outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe in coming weeks.

So far, the outbreak has caused at least 72 illnesses ? including up to 16 deaths ? in 18 states, making it the deadliest food outbreak in the United States in more than a decade.

The heads of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said consumers who have cantaloupes produced by Jensen Farms in Colorado should throw them out. If they are not sure where the fruit is from, they shouldn't eat it.

Neither the government nor Jensen Farms has supplied a list of retailers who may have sold the fruit. Officials say consumers should ask retailers about the origins of their cantaloupe. If they still aren't sure, they should get rid of it.

"If it's not Jensen Farms, it's OK to eat," said Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC. "But if you can't confirm it's not Jensen Farms, then it's best to throw it out."

Jensen Farms of Holly, Colo. says it shipped cantaloupes to 25 states, though the FDA has said it may be more, and illnesses have been discovered in several states that were not on the shipping list. A spokeswoman for Jensen Farms said the company's product is often sold and resold, so they do not always know where it went.

The recalled cantaloupes may be labeled "Colorado Grown," ''Distributed by Frontera Produce," ''Jensenfarms.com" or "Sweet Rocky Fords." Not all of the recalled cantaloupes are labeled with a sticker, the FDA said. The company said it shipped out more than 300,000 cases of cantaloupes that contained five to 15 melons, meaning the recall involved 1.5 million to 4.5 million pieces of fruit.

The FDA said none of the cantaloupes had been exported, reversing an earlier statement that some of the tainted melons had been shipped abroad.

Frieden and FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said that illnesses are expected for weeks to come because the incubation period for listeria can be a month or even longer. That means that someone who ate contaminated cantaloupe last week may not get sick until next month. Jensen Farms last shipped cantaloupeson Sept. 10. The shelf life is about two weeks.

"We will see more cases likely through October," Hamburg said.

The Food and Drug Administration said state health officials found listeria in cantaloupes taken from Colorado grocery stores and from a victim's home that were grown at Jensen Farms. Matching strains of the disease were found on equipment and cantaloupe samples at Jensen Farms' packing facility in Granada, Colo.

Sherri McGarry, a senior adviser in the FDA's Office of Foods, said the agency is looking at the farm's water supply and possible animal intrusions among other things in trying to figure out how the cantaloupes became contaminated. Listeria bacteria grow in moist, muddy conditions and are often carried by animals.

The health officials said this is the first known outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe. Listeria is generally found in processed meats and unpasteurized milk and cheese, though there have been a growing number of outbreaks in produce. Hamburg called the outbreak a "surprise" and said the agencies are studying it closely to find out how it happened.

Cantaloupe is often the source of outbreaks, however. Frieden said CDC had identified 10 other cantaloupeoutbreaks in the last decade, most of them from salmonella.

Listeria is more deadly than well-known pathogens like salmonella and E. coli, though those outbreaks generally cause many more illnesses. Twenty-one people died in an outbreak of listeria poisoning in 1998 traced to contaminated hot dogs and possibly deli meats made by Bil Mar Foods, a subsidiary of Sara Lee Corp. Another large listeria outbreak, in 1985, killed 52 people and was linked to Mexican-style soft cheese.

Listeria generally only sickens the elderly, pregnant women and others with compromised immune systems. The CDC said the median age of those sickened is 78 and that 1 in 5 who contract the disease can die from it. Symptoms include fever and muscle aches, often with other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Unlike many pathogens, listeria bacteria can grow at room temperatures and even refrigerator temperatures. It is hardy and can linger long after the source of the contamination is gone ? health officials say people who may have had the contaminated fruit in their kitchens should clean and sanitize any surfaces it may have touched.

The CDC said Tuesday that 13 deaths are linked to the tainted fruit. State and local officials say they are investigating three additional deaths that may be connected.

The death toll released by the CDC Tuesday surpassed the number of deaths linked to an outbreak of salmonella in peanuts almost three years ago. Nine people died in that outbreak. The CDC reported four deaths in New Mexico, two deaths each in Colorado and Texas and one death each in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Maryland.

New Mexico officials said Tuesday they are investigating a fifth death, while health authorities in Kansas and Wyoming said they too are investigating additional deaths possibly linked to the tainted fruit.

The CDC reported the 72 illnesses and deaths in 18 states. Cases of listeria were reported in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The most illnesses were reported in Colorado, which has seen 15 sickened. Fourteen illnesses were reported in Texas, 10 in New Mexico and eight in Oklahoma.

While most healthy adults can consume listeria with no ill effects, it can kill the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. It is also dangerous to pregnant women because it easily passes through to the fetus. The CDC's Frieden said that two of those sickened were pregnant women but they have since recovered.

The Science of Economics

Life expresses creativity, though in a unique way. Whereas man's creativity is willful, the advance of life is seen through the process of evolution, where new organisms, within new systems of life with higher rates of energy-flux-density emerge, and those that can't keep up with the new, more energetic system go extinct.

The Best Text Expansion App for Mac [Mac App Directory]

The Best Text Expansion App for MacStrangely, Mac OS X has a wide variety of great text expansion apps and everyone does the job well. That said, TypeIt4Me is our favorite thanks to its comprehensive feature set, great performance, and reasonable price.

The Best Text Expansion App for Mac

  • Type a short snippet that can expand to text of virtually any length, along with pictures
  • Auto-corrects spelling errors with choices of dictionaries
  • Automatically fixes common typos
  • User-specific snippet trigger keys
  • Specify special behaviors for specific applications
  • Customizable keyboard shortcuts allow you to
  • Expand by typing or by choosing a snippet from the menu
  • Works with complex variables so you can automatically insert information into your snippets, such as the current date and time
  • Save multiple snippets files (anywhere, so you can sync them with Dropbox for example)
  • Emulates key presses (e.g. tab, backspace, etc.)
  • Provides typing statistics

The Best Text Expansion App for Mac

TypeIt4Me expands your text, corrects your spelling and typos, and lets you customize practically every aspect of the process. You can even choose whether it deletes the snippet you typed or highlights it before replacing it. There are several little options like this that make the entire experience up to, which is really nice. The most important thing is that it works very well, but its many additional features are very welcome.

One great feature worth noting is TypeIt4Me's ability to emulate key presses. For example, say you have to fill out the same web form every day (like in a data entry or blogging app). Emulating key presses allows you to create a snippet that can not only fill out the text fields in the form by tabbing between them, but un/check boxes, choose options from a drop down menu, and more. It's a huge time saver if you have a way to put it to good use. TypeIt4Me has several other handy features like this, making it really fantastic and versatile.

The Best Text Expansion App for Mac

Better organization options would be really helpful, as having many snippets can sometimes get difficult to manage. You can search for what you're looking for but, nonetheless, a folder-like organization scheme would be nice.

The Best Text Expansion App for Mac

We've covered the competition pretty extensively in our Mac Text Expansion Face-off, but here's a summary. Text Expander ($35) and Typinator (20?) were both good contenders but cost more and didn't perform as well as TypeIt4Me. Snippets ($5) has fewer features than everything else but is much cheaper. For people requiring very little in the way of text expansion, or for those who prefer the option of filling in variables in their snippets like a form, Snippets is a pretty good choice.

Additionally, we recently discoverd DashExpander, which is free and pretty great. It has a very unusual interface and can be a little weird to use at first, but is nonetheless really good even if you would be willing to pay for it. The app is very responsive, plus the way it expands text with variables is pretty neat. It shows the entire snippet and you type to fill in the blanks. It doesn't have a feature set comparable to some of the paid options, but if you're looking for a free text expansion app DashExpander should serve you well.

Is it Better to Buy or Lease a Car After Bankruptcy? | Financial ...

If you want to get approved at the best possible terms when buying a car, it?s important you know a car lender?s credit guidelines before you apply for credit?especially if you?re bankrupt.

It will save you time and frustration?but more importantly, it will help you avoid credit inquiries that may lower your FICO credit scores up to 12 points per inquiry.

Step 1 in making a lease or buy decision is to determine a lender?s credit guidelines.

You start by asking if they lend to people with a bankruptcy. If so, on what terms?

That?s right. You have to be upfront that you?ve filed bankruptcy. Don?t hide it. We have to face the fact that some dealers just won?t work with people who?ve filed bankruptcy. So our job is to find the ones that do.

Some lenders will only lease to people with a bankruptcy. Others will only offer purchase financing. Yet still others will only lend using a hybrid of the two?this is especially common in Texas.

Ask the finance director at the dealership to direct you as to what structure the manufacturer prefers.

And here?s a quick tip for you: if your bankruptcy doesn?t appear on the credit report your lender pulls?then, in the eyes of the lender, you?re not bankrupt.

The only lenders I would consider using are:

- First choice: Captive lenders (car manufacturers)

- Second choice: Banks (not finance companies)

- Third choice: Credit unions

Ninety-nine percent of the cars I?ve leased over the years have been with captive lenders. Just one was leased by a bank.

That particular deal came from a conversation I had with Amy, the finance manager at the local Land Rover dealership here in Indianapolis. I told her I was open to her financing recommendations, but I preferred financing through the car manufacturer.

I told her my current FICO scores. She immediately said that with my scores she could do better through a local bank. I signed a credit application and told her to go for it.

The next day I signed a lease agreement with that local bank. Being open to her advice literally saved me hundreds of dollars a month on that car.

So be flexible?but be careful. It seems most car dealers call all of their funding sources banks. When in reality some are banks, some are credit unions, and most are sub-prime finance companies.

Here is a list of some of the most commonly used sub-prime auto finance companies:

1. HSBC Automotive

2. Capital One

3. AmeriCredit

4. WFS Financial

You want to pass on the sub-prime finance companies?unless you have exhausted all other options. Sub-prime lenders should be your last resort.

And only use credit unions if they report to all three national credit reporting agencies. How do you find out if a credit union reports to all three credit reporting agencies?

Simple?you ask. Ask the branch manager at the credit union if they report. And after you get the loan, check all three of your credit reports and make sure their trade line appears on each one.

The three worst luxury captive lenders to lease or purchase from after bankruptcy are:

1. BMW

2. Mercedes

3. Porsche

The three worst mainstream captive lenders are:

1. Honda

2. Kia/Subaru

3. Toyota

What makes these the worst?

Once these lenders see that you?ve filed bankruptcy, they are less likely to work with you. However, if they are willing to work with you, they?ll want you to be at least several years from discharge and have perfect credit during that time.

Now that I told you how bad the above six lenders are?there are times where they may offer you good deals. For example, if one of the above happens to be the biggest dealer in your area, they may be able to offer you special deals that a smaller dealer can?t.

Of course, things change all the time with captive auto lenders. They change their credit guidelines on a whim to meet their own financial goals. So, it?s always a good idea to at least research these dealerships?just don?t get your hopes up too high.

OK, so you?ve done your research and narrowed down your choice to one or two car manufacturers.

Step 2 in making a lease or buy decision is to purchase your FICO credit scores.

It?s important you have your most recent scores when you talk to car dealers (just like I did with Amy). It puts you in charge.

When you enter a dealership with your FICO scores, the dealer will know you?re a more informed consumer and cannot be taken advantage of. Just know that the FICO credit scores auto dealers use are a little different than what we see as consumers. The scores the dealers review are called FICO Auto Industry Option Scores. The good news?these FICO scores may be higher than your normal FICO scores if you paid all previous auto loans as agreed.

Some car dealers have told me that if your FICO scores are higher than the scores the dealer reviews?they may even use your scores to get a better deal.

You can buy your scores from myFICO.com.

Step 3 is to interview the remaining car dealers on a deeper level.

Start by asking them these questions:

- Which credit reporting agency do you use to make a lending decision?

- What is your minimum credit score requirement to get approved?

- What credit score is needed to get the best interest rate?

- Do your lenders prefer offering lease or purchase financing to a bankrupt debtor?

- What incentives are there to lease or purchase right now?

At this point it?s important to remain open to either leasing or purchasing. Evaluate your options and incentives. Remember, you?re buying the financing. In other words, the most important factor is the willingness of the lender to loan you money.

I personally view the lease versus buy decision in three ways:

1. If you?re recently recovering from bankruptcy, the only thing that matters is if you can get approved at an interest rate you can afford through a lender that reports to all three national credit reporting agencies. So you should only consider lenders that are bankruptcy friendly.

2. Once your credit scores begin to increase, you can start selecting cars based on which credit reporting agency the lender uses to determine if you qualify. Obviously, you should choose the lender who uses your highest FICO credit score to make a lending decision.

3. When your scores are high enough?or two years have passed after your bankruptcy?or your bankruptcy doesn?t appear on the credit report the lender uses, then you can choose almost any car you like. But make sure you still do your research and use your credit scores to help you compare interest rates, terms and incentives.

Credit Card Debt Relief: Weigh Your Options

Thousands, maybe even millions of Americans are working really hard only to give up their pay checks to the credit card companies that are gaining so much profit on monthly interest. Most of these Americans started from missing monthly payments one after another until their credit scores are affected and star dropping down and then ultimately they find themselves drowning in credit card debts. Under this distressing situation, these individuals start their rigid search on how to get rid of their credit card debts without affecting their already debilitated financial status.

The internet offers a lot of options for credit card debt relief but it seems that not all of these options work. Or maybe, some options work for some people but not for others. As if the stress involved in all these credit card debts isn?t enough, some credit card debt relief schemes even scam people out of their hard-earned money. Thus, it is very important to weigh several options before plunging into any credit card debt relief scheme to make sure it will help alleviate financial issues and not worsen them. Below is a list of some of these options:

  • Debt Consolidation ? is by the most effective way to get out of credit card debts as this option could really work especially if the debtor finds a consolidation company that is really out to help people in financial distress. This option offers minimum payment and financial charge reduction by merging all credit card debts in one single debt ? and thus, one single payment. When an individual enters a credit card debt consolidation program, he is giving himself the chance and the ability to setup a payment scheme that he feels he can afford and is best for his financial situation. The payment scheme for this option is very flexible which makes this a very popular choice among credit card owners. This scheme is also famous because it is not meant to destroy a person?s credit score, but rather enhance it. Attaining a good credit standing once again is highly possible because the consumer is given the chance to pay up all his credit card debts in one monthly payment that is charged with a lower interest rate.
  • Credit Card Debt Negotiation and Closure ? doesn?t really work for everybody but it could work for some. In this option, the consumer must have a correct mind set about going through closure and the possibility of bankruptcy. In credit card debt negotiation, there is a third party involved called a ?Debt Negotiator? who is responsible for obtaining a debt settlement between the consumer and the credit card company. Thus, if a consumer owns the company let?s say, $20,000, the role of the Debt Negotiator is to pull the amount down to let?s say, $10,000. This option sounds good for the person who owes as he may become debt-free in a matter of 2 or 3 years rather than 10 years of paying his credit card debt. There are some credit card companies though that wouldn?t settle unless the consumer really gives up on paying the debt or declare bankruptcy. This would definitely hurt the consumer?s credit score but if he is left with no other choice then he can take this on ? it?s that or pay the same credit card debt for the rest of his life.
  • Bank?s Special Credit Card Programs ? There are banks that can answer some consumer?s credit card debt problems. These banks have developed special programs that aim to help their customers pay down their credit cards. One program is by offering loans with lower interest so that the consumer may use the loaned money to pay his credit card debts and just pay the bank monthly in a much lower interest and a much lower monthly payment. Some banks even offer automatic payment direct from a consumer?s bank account so that the consumer will not lapse on his payments. This could be very beneficial for a consumer especially with the fact that it can help rebuild his credit score. The downside however is that, not all banks would offer this program to just anybody. There are certain conditions that apply and it might not be easy to get approved but it is worth a try.
  • Major Financial Revamp ? may not sound so attractive to most people but can just be the solution to their credit card debt problems. With some people spending more than they can afford through their credit cards and living a way of life beyond their capacity, a major financial revamp is certainly impossible. But for those who are willing to change their expensive lifestyle just to make sure they solve their credit card problems will not have any problem with this option. It takes a lot of discipline and planning though and if a consumer is impatient about his financial situation then this option may not be for him. This option is sometimes called a ?self-help? or ?do-it-yourself? debt relief option and only works for those who are willing to redevelop their budget and change their lifestyle.

So, which one of these options will work? It all depends on an individual?s debt level, discipline level and his future financial plans.

Soldiers reach last of India's quake-hit villages (AP)

MANGAN, India ? Soldiers in India's northeast have reached the last villages cut off by landslides from a powerful earthquake that shook the Himalayan region last weekend and killed more than 100 people, an army officer said Friday.

The first soldiers were airlifted into the nine villages on Thursday carrying food and medicine for about 1,000 residents stranded after last Sunday's magnitude-6.9 earthquake, which also struck parts of Tibet and Nepal, Maj. Gen. S.L. Narasimhan said.

He said more soldiers were able to make their way into the villages by ground after hiking along mountainous paths.

Rescuers found two bodies Friday as they cleared debris in Mangan, near the quake's epicenter, said K.S. Topjay, a state government spokesman. The overall death toll stood at 108 __ 95 in India, six in Nepal and seven in Tibet.

Rescue efforts following the quake were hampered by heavy rains that kept helicopters grounded. Mudslides triggered by the disaster blocked roads leading into remote, mountainous villages.

"It will take some time to clear the damaged roads," Narasimhan said.

The helicopters were able to evacuate some injured people to hospitals for treatment, he said.

Meanwhile, a magnitude-3.9 aftershock Thursday night caused panic in Sikkim state, one of the hardest hit, with thousands of people rushing out of their homes, said Topjay.

There were no reports of damage from the aftershock, he said.

Abbas stakes Palestinian claim to state at U.N. (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asked the United Nations on Friday to recognize a state for his people, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the world body as a "theater of the absurd" and said only direct talks could deliver peace.

Abbas handed U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon a letter requesting full U.N. membership, which the Security Council will discuss on Monday. The United States has vowed to support its Israeli ally and use its veto if a vote is held.

"I do not believe that anyone with a shred of conscience can reject our application ... and our admission as an independent state," Abbas told the U.N. General Assembly in an impassioned speech that won a standing ovation even as Israeli and U.S. delegates looked on stone-faced.

Trying to head off a clash in the Security Council, a quartet of Middle East mediators urged a return to peace talks within four weeks, "substantial progress" within six months and an agreement to be struck within a year.

Highlighting the divisions in the Palestinian camp, Hamas, the Islamist faction which rules the Gaza Strip, rejected Abbas' move as "begging" for statehood. "States are not built upon U.N. resolutions. States liberate their land and establish their entities," said Hamas spokesman Ismail Haniyeh.

The Quartet -- the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations -- asked Israel and the Palestinians to submit proposals on territory and security within three months.

"The Quartet proposal represents the firm conviction of the international community that a just and lasting peace can only come through negotiations," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, urging both sides to seize the chance to talk.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Quartet's special envoy, said the major powers believed they were closing in on guidelines that both sides could accept.

But previous proposed timetables for negotiations, such as a one-year deadline set by former U.S. President George W. Bush in 2007 and one by Obama a year ago, have run into the sand.

Abbas' statehood ploy exposes waning U.S. influence in a region shaken by Arab revolts and shifting alliances that have pushed Israel, still militarily strong, deeper into isolation.

In their speeches, Abbas and Netanyahu both said they extended their hands to the other party, but each blamed their opponents for the failure of past peace efforts.

"We cannot achieve peace through U.N. resolutions," Netanyahu said, demanding that the Palestinians recognize Israel as the Jewish state, something they reject because they say that would prejudice the rights of Palestinian refugees.

Netanyahu offered to meet Abbas immediately in New York, minutes after Abbas said settlement activity must cease first.

LOSS OF FAITH

The Palestinians say they will give the Security Council "some time" to consider their request, but if that fails may ask the General Assembly for upgraded status short of full membership that could let them join international bodies.

Abbas' statehood bid reflects a loss of faith after 20 years of failed peace talks sponsored by the United States and alarm at Israeli settlement expansion in occupied land Palestinians want for a state.

"This (settlement) policy will destroy the chances of achieving a two-state solution and ... threatens to undermine the structure of the Palestinian National Authority and even end its existence," Abbas declared.

It was the first time he has spoken so starkly of the PA's possible demise, highlighting problems faced by a body set up as a state-in-waiting but now seen by its critics as little more than a big municipality, managing the civilian affairs of the main Palestinian cities under Israeli occupation.

Dissolution of the PA would throw responsibility for ruling all of the West Bank back to Israel as the occupying power.

Israeli and U.S. politicians have threatened aid cuts that could cripple the PA, the source of 150,000 jobs.

Israeli delegates stayed in the hall during Abbas' speech, which was punctuated by applause, especially when he recalled his predecessor Yasser Arafat's 1974 admonition to the United Nations: "Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand."

In the West Bank, flags and portraits of Abbas and Arafat, draped buildings in a Ramallah square where Palestinians watched a live broadcast of Abbas' speech.

"We have come to take part with our people in asking for our rights," said Mohammed Hamidat, 40. "With the current closed horizons, it's the only thing we can do, even if the result is failure. It's been years since we have seen anything new: this is a first step."

Israeli settler Meir Bartler, 25, said: "We don't care what they're up to at the U.N. We have the bible, which says the land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people."

A gulf of mistrust separates Israelis and Palestinians, who each feel their existence is at stake in a bitter struggle over borders, security, refugees and Jerusalem.

Political rifts among Palestinians, and the constraints of U.S. domestic politics, where support for Israel is strong, further complicate efforts to bridge the gaps.

Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rdaineh said the Quartet proposal would be discussed in Ramallah but indicated there could be no compromise on the core issues of the 1967 borders and Jewish settlement construction.

BURDEN OF HISTORY

The divisions are rooted in a heavy burden of history, painfully contested narratives and recurring bloodshed.

The United Nations partitioned Palestine in 1947, but Arab states rejected that and declared war on the new state of Israel, which then captured more territory than it had been allotted under the U.N. plan and dispossessed hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, who became refugees.

Two decades after Israel seized the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Middle East war, which it launched fearing Arab states were about to attack it, the Palestine Liberation Organization recognized Israel and reduced its demands to a state on those territories.

In 1993, PLO leader Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shook hands at the White House on a plan for Palestinian self-rule, which was never fully implemented.

Israel has expanded its settlements in the West Bank, although it dismantled them in the Gaza Strip, now ruled by Hamas Islamists who refuse to recognize the Jewish state.

Abbas accepts that negotiations are still necessary, but argues statehood will put Palestinians on a more equal footing. Israel sees the U.N. bid as an attempt to destroy its own legitimacy.

Theoretical Priciples of De-aestheticized Art | Knowledge Base

"Art is a lie, we recognize the Truth." ? Pablo Picasso

What kind of lie is compatible with the contemporary art today?
What kind of truth that we realize through contemporary art?

Contemporary visual art scene is also a place full of broken mirror, which reflects the images to each other in the multidimensional media circus. The technique of cataloging and classification, the creation of the category, it could serve as a key to mapping and understanding of the complexity of the variety of approaches and tendencies that are in the current panorama in the world of art. Criteria for the creation and selection will be taken from random structures, and theoretical questioning the importance of the development of art.

The first category for the entire system are those of matter and consciousness. They offer the trunk from which all other categories of the various branches of the tribe. All elements are connected together, can each be understood as an element of the set. -Dialectical Materialism (A. Spirkin)

The determination of the significance of trends in art or simple styles, establish groups or other structures, it is not relevant in the near future. "Anything Goes" is replaced by: "What?" With all the information and tools available today, each one could become an artist. People from all professions are playing with the new media. Garageband is a musician or a designer of graphics software, or use your digital camera for a photographer? New technologies to create a competitive game because everybody wants to win. Winning art, the experience also means "15 minutes of fame around the world" and a "superhero". Offers the consumer society, in which the surface of happiness. Those who see the game if he plays at all. Fortunately, you can not play at the same time. The audience ranges from small groups (family and friends) of large social groups. In large social communities and national structures, at the request of the "hero-artist" from, and the culture is broken into small pieces of individualized activities on a regional basis. Examine the artistic patterns in the context of contemporary philosophy of art rather a concept that everyone is or can be an artist to accept. The significance, importance and the consequences are of low power of the mind and have a great influence on the cultural and social life. Why? Requires the abandonment of the notion of conceptual thinking.

My artistic approach is on such foundations. Not that I do in the situation, the process of non-dualistic, but I'll try to talk a little "time speculative forward-looking statements after the end of art. Sooner or later this trend will be identified as an unusual way. Historically, the construction of this road is a paradox in the sense (especially on a collective level), but similar trends are in the air post-postmodern rain found, and soon appears in the sky like a rainbow.

The Conservatives are now looking for unique and interesting angle to defend their position by specific techniques, when used for art exhibitions. The use of traditional methods to ensure the cycle of the system of technology, from creation to distribution and protect the cultural capital of the seat. Scenes more alternatives (against technology, forums or other so-called "new media") are not the solution to the basic function of art in contemporary culture-platform world, because they rely on mechanisms of selective traditional conservatives and prejudices. What I mean by that? I mean, studying the process of prosecution in relation to the definition of what we call art. As an indication of the dialectical philosophy is an example of the potential of the idea given by A. Danto demonstrate, philosophy of art of all times. These ideas must be taken not only by the artists themselves, but also make the new structures that support the platform of the official cultural context.

What are the results of the conference held in Tehran in 2001? The art will remain during the presentation of the 20th Century are presented. Support structures, static views certainly not to increase public awareness and awareness of the problems of the world of modern art. The artist Mark Kostabi refers to the idea that art, a slave market. Some conservatives are in motion that set by such statements. In the overall consideration of Westernization, a phenomenon that Mr. Kostabi's be a leader ? a hero who is the ideal combination of quality, that the contemporary artist must possess. It is also the best evidence of the lie who understand us, the truth about today's technology helps.
Like a flash of neon art mirrors everywhere.
It seems that a new quality of the questions that arose since the Arthur Danto's ideas in the book titled "After the End of Art, 1998." Ten years ago, Arthur Danto announced that art ended in the sixties. Has made this statement at the top of a radical criticism of the way the art of our time. "Art is a philosophy.

I've always believed in the search for answers in the space between the search for middle ground. Neither postmodernism nor new approaches to mass media, the answers are to understand the place of art in the morning. Postmodern world is a world of fun. It's like an amusement park, where the possibilities are endless and we feel overwhelmed for a while, but we need to go take a break from information overload and home.
Kostabi is one of those who know the art market, and exploited for its intelligence penetrated the system, so you can do what he wants. We need to pay for the cheapest tickets in the pocket. I admire him because he realized that the dream of every artist. Or is it a dream of every artist recognized and sale of works of art from around the world?
Otherwise, what is it?

It is always useful to ask questions like: What is art? How to deal with it? What is the nature of beauty? I am referring to a dialogue between Einstein and Tagore in 1930.

Einstein: There are two different conceptions of the nature of the universe ? the world is as a unity of humanity and the world as a reality independent of the human factor.
Tagore: If our universe is in harmony with man, the eternal, we know to be true, we feel as beauty. "
E: If there are no more people, the Apollo Belvedere no longer be beautiful?
T: No!
E: I agree with this view of beauty, but not in relation to the truth.
T: Why not? The truth is reached by means of men.
E: I can not prove that my view is correct, but it is my religion.
T: Beauty is in the ideal of perfect harmony, the universal truth is a comprehensive understanding of the universal spirit. As we are the individual level with our faults and mistakes, through experience, through our illumined consciousness approach. How else can know the truth? google_ad_channel = "7940249670", AB_unit_channel AB_cat_channel + +; google_language "is" =; google_ad_region = 'test', ? Dmitri Marianoff published in The New York Times, 10 August 1930

"Contemporary artists seem closer than ever to new horizons. One reason for this failure be the separation between the artistic activity of speculative thought."
2001 Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, the International Conference on Philosophy of Art.

What has happened since the conference? How to overcome the speculative idea, whether it arises because of the cultural values, with the support of the society in which we live?
How to identify the place or individual works of art in the world of art, as complex and varied, without affecting the originality in comparison to the changes in art? How to cope with a rapid rate, from minute to minute changes in trends in art? How the individual contributes to the artists of his era to life, and carries not only the nature of the 15 minutes of the story? What values, the reasons for the art of tomorrow? No analogy in the history of the situation of our time? What are the future forms of visual inspection? What is the production of art will be in the near future 10 years? What is the role of new media? Are you an artist in the philosophy of art should be involved? Can create unique works of art are created in isolation? If so, how the processes of art are individually structured and globally?
And "interesting to consider, a pioneer in the new era of art. My motivation is to explore the realm of possibility. In no inherent interest in aspects of art, and I do not know how the evolving possibilities of artistic thinking. In 1999 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, inspired by I. Kabakov installation, where I presented my work space with drawings and engravings on the floor and white fabrics, with the intention of questioning the very meaning of art. White cloth was there to ask the reason for the continuation of the brand and the histories of art. I saw a circle of possibilities. If it was possible at all, and was an art, an art that was nothing, it was the death of art. But now I realize it's only the beginning of my long journey to understanding the truth about art.

The Incredibles (2004) updated the feelings towards the end of art.
"If everyone is a superhero who is not super-heroes."

To continue the activity, the products that are labeled as an art to formulate and consider the following facts were leading:
1st Analysis of the situation.
2nd Basic error of motivation and self-injury.
3rd The formulation of solutions and strategies.

2nd BASE CAR misunderstandings and MOTIVATION
I played with some of the dilemmas traditional dualistic mind. The adoption of the dual aspect of things leads to critical thinking, not only in art. The creation of categories is the beginning of the tragedy of the period after the end of art. Therefore, the beauty and any other category is defined, in which continuous labels.
Definition of the other grounds of error is the juxtaposition of art models of Nietzsche and Malraux and the creative process.

Nietzsche
a. He wants a less artistic. But the belief in the "genius"
b.one dark instincts tirades of disaffected, ambitious, self-ghost dressed in a democratic age: the importance of laying.
C. A method for the transfer of technology in other ways, combines art with the objectives of interest or knowledge in a church or race (nationalism), or philosophy.
D.ON attract women who are victims, anger, etc. False "intensification".

Andr? Malraux
Art is an exhibition of the universal creativity of the individual. Through the work of human art was and is to fight and overcome the physical limitations of their personal and social (historical) target. Malraux refused to explain works of art in relation to the biographies of their creators, and it is against this approach by the motives and content of art.

3rd Formulation and solution strategy / VISION UTOPIA

a. revival of the legendary quality.
Because of the degeneracy of the age of spiritual values ??and the end of the old gods, and that migration is responsible for the multi-cultural mix, I'm looking for an opportunity to New St.. This is not a transcendent artistic creation. It is a pursuit of an art form, content on the evolutionary dialectic of social wisdom, which is very sacred secret essence of respect can be achieved. This is a new field level for new colors, shapes and textures. Renewal forms of art on the revaluation of the attributes of the sacred history and the importance of modern times, the grounds and the outlook for ways new to the sacred. And "the revival of the symbols that exist already in the world. This is a creation of a new religion, but a new level of social consciousness. Shape remains the same opinion, is different. Technology, art and philosophy are integrated in the symbiosis.

b. The role of artists, galleries and cultural industries. The combination of both worlds. Cultural wisdom. Utopia.
This would mean the end of "his game marketing ? ruled by art dealers, gallery owners and publishers, the affairs of the cultural sector have to manage."
The global society is ruled by the cultural wisdom. Artistic creation is no more than the act of creation. "Art is spontaneous as breathing." Artist takes shape, which is immediately and naturally blend with the surroundings so that the unconscious mind through the wisdom, the dilemma that prevents the hierarchical model is regulated. S gallery space is no longer necessary and the room was a showcase. The total space requires no installation. The art is a conscious representation of the image plane, the experience of the retina or the selection of the image into the consciousness of the aesthetics and the placement was requested. The artists make art that is already mixed into the natural environment in the context of space and serves as the ability to manage public performance. Wisdom of the culture are seen by the human consciousness, which offers unlimited potential to define to define the pictorial structure of reality, and their limits, the limits of understanding of reality.

C. The clash of cultures. World culture. Meta-code, art and religion.
We have a world class experience in the formation of new cultural quality, based on cultural conflicts. (Example: listen to the experience of total cultural forms at home in Los Angeles with my friends, Persian music and japanese techno Mexico, eating cheese with bread, Arabic, Bulgarian, Russian pickles and drink French wine, about Slovak culture or the latest fashion trends in London.) East and West, North or South, have to meet the process is still ongoing and it is difficult to predict the results of a culture shock. But we must have to be present during the formation of the universal space in which cultural identities look new. This will result in a temporary crisis of individual identity, but ultimately lead to the identity of the global consciousness.
Americanization of the world can be a model of globalization in the world with positive and negative aspects. Migration to the caves is limited. SJLewy

4th Continuous production and symbiosis VISUAL
I would like to the surface past the point of application A. The philosophy of scratches Danto 's on the end of art. Not that I "dare" to develop their ideas from the philosophical point of view, but I just want to reflect and articulate fragments strictly as an artistic vision.

"A philosophical question arises whenever we have two objects that appear in all participants are equal, but who belong to very different philosophical categories.
? And it is no less true when it comes to explaining the differences between art and the only real things that will happen exactly look like this.
? For example, based on the images as objects of perception complex. While they are, but because the objects can imagine perfectly congruent with those that are not works of art that should be synonymous with the degree of complexity of perception. Finally, the problem arose mainly because there can be no difference in the perception imagine if relevant. Can not serve in the possession of the "aesthetic quality" and it would be strange that a work of art was nice, but something like, if not a work of art is not. In fact, it was a great effort of philosophy, art, conceptual art, an aesthetic. Marcel Duchamp was an artist far more deeply than Warhol, who describes himself elected as "readymade" objects for their lack of aesthetic qualities identified ? Grooming Combs, wearing a hat, and notoriously, bathroom plumbing parts. "Beauty is beloved in order to avoid the danger," Duchamp wrote his most controversial, the Source, 1917. It was a great effort to point out that Duchamp's art one is intellectual, conceptual and society is not only something that the senses and emotions come into play, and it must be true of all art, including those determined to the satisfaction of the eyes or ears and not only those works, particularly as the "philosophical" as the School of Athens by Raphael, or Magic Mountain are male. Someone outside the Republic of Plato, the choreography, not only because of its content, the more philosophical or Coppelia, Petrouchka. In fact, they may be more philosophical, like they do with real dancers dance, the dancers mimic mimics real doll!
Where the components of a theory of art are you going? I think the first step in recognizing that art works can be done are representations, not necessarily resemble the old sense of his subjects, but in the broader sense is always legitimate to ask what.
Well, of course, not all works of art represented, and the definition is started. I will not take the next step. All I wanted to show what I do is to consider how the philosophy of art has deep problems, the problems of representation and reality, the structure, the truth and meaning. In view of these things, moving from the periphery to the center of philosophy, and so curious about two things they do. For art reaches the level of consciousness has come to realize in our time, the distinction between art and philosophy is problematic because the distinction between reality and art. And to the extent that the appreciation of art is a matter of applied philosophy, should not be underestimated, "-. A. Danto

I believe that art is the level where its own representation is the representation of the pure existence to achieve. What I mean pure existence? Ii is the cleaning in relation to creation is not. The whole creation is pregnant with their cause. Thus, the cleaning of the reason for the creation of the cleaning, the act of creation.
The global awareness of the level of cultural knowledge provides the platform, where all things are become works of fine art. It would be the awareness and ability, the piece of reality and the aesthetic quality of the frame to apply it. The reality at the level of cultural knowledge, ultimately de-aestheticized. Idea of ??Marcel Duchamp was to eliminate the risk entirely aesthetic pleasure and his vision.
All aspects of reality can become art, but the culture does not allow dual reality of Wisdom (studies), became the artistic director or the collective level, or other regional levels in order. What there is just one possible view of the level of consciousness. But in the last stages of the cultivation of wisdom, in the last phase of serenity, the aesthetic experience touches of reality, as the last art could take place simultaneously in more than one person. Could follow the evolution of collective experience. The result of the parallel experiment shows the evolution of the human species into the subtle spiritual quality and the realization of the inseparability of beauty in their lives. And "the experience of the highest aesthetic. This will result in the formation of the new social structure, where the "shaman" protecting the sacred world.
The essence of the Sanctuary is in all aspects of reality that the door sticks to the final creation, the seed that could be the beauty of nature.
